Greenbelt, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the western edge of the county and is bordered by Anne Arundel County to the north and east, Carroll County to the south, and Washington County to the west. As of 2010 census it had a population of 24,733. The population was 25,711 as of 2016. The name "Greenbelt" comes from two references: one being an 18th century map which showed Beltway 17 as "The Green Belt", while another reference being in a 1922 article in "The Baltimore Sun" which said that beltway 16 should be called "The Beltway around Greenbelt". Greenbelt was founded on July 1st, 1865 by Captain John Smeaton with land purchased from Robert Carter Jr., who had bought land from Sir Walter Scott for £2 per acre. The first post office opened in Greenbelt on November 7th, 1868. In 1870-71 Major General James Hance laid out streets and squares in what is now downtown Greenbelt using funds provided by Congress through the Homestead Act. He named them Centennial Square after America's centennial year (1876). In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson announced his support for World War I and ordered all American businesses destroyed within three months so they could be replaced with supplies coming overland from Europe. Many small businesses were unable to meet this order and closed their doors permanently; some such as Juglar Shoes still exist today thanks to their customers who found new jobs elsewhere during wartime shortages. The name came from an old plantation called Beltane Hill near modern Greenbelt Township in Prince George's County. In 1802, when President James K. Polk sent troops against Fort McAllister on Mount Suribachi in Japan, General John Armstrong led a detachment of Marines into present-day Montgomery County to protect American interests there during the war with Japan On July 24, 1838, Isaac Neely patented 10 acres (4 ha) of land east of Bethesda Avenue (the current site of Greenbelt) as "Neely's Land" in anticipation that he would be able to build a home there after purchasing other tracts from farmers around Bethesda golf course and White Marsh Creek area southward along I-495 toward Laurel Hills Boulevard today's Hyattsville neighborhood . This parcel became known as Neely Farms due to its original owner - later Senator Nathaniel Pinchot Sr., father of Ulysses S.-Sydney Grant - who named it after his late brother Elias Neely Jr., then an Assistant Secretary at War under Polk who had also helped purchase most of this property along I-495 westward from Elkridge Road today's Friendship Heights neighborhood . The town began as just one small hamlet located off Huntingdon Road between Burt Branch Drive and University Park Drive today's College Park neighborhoods about two miles northeast then about three miles northwest from where it currently stands approximately bounded by North Huntingdon Road (east side), Interstate 95W (west side), US Route 26 (southwest edge), US Route 40W (northeast edge), US Route 611E (southeast edge).
