Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,824 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. The area that nowincludes Greenbelt was first settled by English colonists in 1695 and was named for Colonel James Green of Virginia. In 1792, General John Forbes purchased land from Lord Fairfax for £10,000 after he had won the Battle of Saratoga. This land served as Greenbelt until 1836 when it became part of Cumberland County. In 1886, Congress created Prince George's County and annexed parts of Cumberland County to form it. At this time, much of what is now Greenbelt was included in Cumberland County including Springdale and parts of Bowie and Elkins counties which were then organized into Montgomery County under Governor Samuel Johnsbury on November 3rd, 1886. During World War II much land within present day Greenbelt werearpurchased by the government to build military installations such as Fort Meade and Ft Belvoir outside the town limits while residential areas within town limits were built up for servicemen and their families living near those installations. After the war many people returned to their homes intown while others moved out into the surrounding rural communities during what has come to be known as "the Āgean migration". The post-war years saw an increase in population due to growth inside city walls rather than outside them; however this also led to increased traffic on local streets leading to an increase in cost associated with maintaining infrastructure such as roads and sewers without sufficient funding from county coffers which made housing more expensive and difficult to come by especially for low-income residents who could not afford typical high school tuition rates or mortgages without interest payments which would have required hours away from home each week working on a job paying minimum wage just enough money so they could live comfortably but not comfortably enough so they couldn't maintain their homes

It is located on the eastern edge of the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area and is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Greenbelt was chartered on April 24, 1872 as a result of a competition between two towns in Prince George's County: Beltsville and Grosse Pointe Woods. The name "Greenbelt" comes from "glebe," meaning "a piece of land extending along one or more sides of a stream." The original green belt was created by draining marshland to create an open space for farming. A post office called Greenbelt was established in 1875, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1927, President Herbert Hoover signed an executive order calling for the construction of what would become known as White House Park. The park cost $1 million and took three years to build; it opened to the public on October 4, 1929. Today, White House Park consists of over 30 miles (48 km) of hiking trails that explore many aspects of American history including Mount Vernon, Georgetown University (the oldest university on Washington), Independence Hall National Historical Park (the home of America's first sitting president), Smithsonian Institution Museum Of Fine Arts (the largest museum in Washington), and Vice Presidential Library & Museum inside the George Washington Carver National Monument. According to the 2000 census Greenbelt had 10% white minority residents while 100% black residents lived within its borders; however this has changed since 1990 when African Americans made up just 5% percent listings within Greenbelt’s total population while white majority residents increased their representation by 2%. In 2011 African Americans constituted 9% percent listings within Greenbelt but made up 25% percent overall workforce totaling 15K jobs according to US Census data which supports claims that African Americans have regained some level economic power since then
