Greenbelt, Maryland is a census-designated place in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hyattsville–MD–VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Greenbelt" was first given to the community by General John J. Pershing in 1916 for his military campaign against the Mexican Revolution and for other purposes around Hyattsville. The community replaced what had been an Indian hunting camp on the Potomac River which was abandoned due to malaria and cholera epidemics in 1835 and 1836. Greenbelt became an agricultural center after being bought by George Washington Carver from its original owners in 1915 as part of a land swap with Johnston County, Virginia. Carver developed Greenbelt into one of America's most successful agricultural regions as he made large contributions to both local food production and national politics during his lifetime and after his death in 1925. In 1955, Greenbelt became a town when it annexed nearby Takoma Park. In 1970, it again annexed Takoma Park but this time kept its name. After more than three decades of alternating names change (Takoma Park-Lakeside-Greenbelt), Green Belt residents voted to change their name back to Greenbelt on November 5th, 2006 following years of planning by members of the community Advisory Council[1].
