It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area and is located adjacent to Falls Church, Virginia. The history of Greenbelt dates back to 1795 when two brothers, John and Thomas Green were granted land near modern-day Greenbelt. In 1836, Governor James Krieger created a new township out of portions of Loudoun and Frederick counties known as Alexandria Township. The name was changed to Greenbelt in 1867 when the town became an incorporated municipality. The first post office in Greenbelt opened in 1868. The first store on what is now Bay Road opened in 1870. By 1895, there were 10 businesses in the town with a total payroll of $10,000. In 1951, Green Belt voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Arlington County due to its location within commuting distance of Doha Airport and its potential for economic development as well as its close proximity to Dulles Air Force Base which served as home base for U-2 pilots during their flights over America during the Cold War days

Pershing named Greenbelt "the Alma Mater of His Army" in honor of his maternal grandmother who died young at age 21 while serving with American forces during World War I. subsequent military units that were stationed there include 3rd Infantry Division (1917-1920), 2nd Battalion (1921-1924), 4th Armored Cavalry Regiment (1925-1929), 1st Marine Raider Battalion (October 1935 -present) and 9th Airborne Division (May 1945 - present).
