After a fire destroyed most of Greenbelt in 1886, Congress placed a prohibition against liquor sales within five miles of any public school within twenty-four hours after each day for two years; this law served as the basis for future zoning regulations which still apply to Greenbelt today. In 1907, when West Bethesda residents voted to annex their neighbor to form a new city limits boundary with Druid Hill City proper on I-95 – they did so without consulting their counterparts in East Bethesda or West Bethesda (then known as Upper Falls Village) which continued to operate under their own municipal boundaries until 1951. A referendum held in November 1914 allowed annexation of parts of Upper Falls Village by themselves as well; these developments are now known as Bowie Heights and Bowie Mill Center respectively. A new shopping center called Pompano Beach opened on I-95 northbound near US 301 in 1966 just south of where Lower Falls Boulevard used to be before being redesignated I-495/US 301 during the 1990s when those highways were rerouted near Laurel Stadium
