Greenbelt is located on Eastern Avenue between Interstate 66 and Park Boulevard and it straddles what used to be Frederick Douglass National Monument until it acquired that area in 1990. Fort Meade once had a significant role in American history as it housed two armies during World War II: the First Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment which fought at Guadalcanal and later Okinawa; also Ft Meade’s Commanding General Headquarters and all subordinate commands were stationed here until 1975 when they moved back to Quantico Navy Base. Today, there are several dozen acres (100 hectares) of open space within walking distance of most households in thetown center that serve as a park or greenway for public use and may be used for agricultural purposes if needed by developers or by local farmers who feel that land accessible from their homes would not otherwise be available for agriculture due to zoning regulations or lack thereof
