Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 20,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Arlington, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Greenbelt derives from "Gardening Belt" because of its location on rolling hills near the Potomac River and Interstate 95. The first settlers in what is now Greenbelt were farmers who grew corn, wheat and other crops near their homes. In 1874, he railroad came through town and stimulated development as people built homes and businesses along Route 711 (now U.S. 301). In 1924, when the Washington Senators moved from Boston to Baltimore, they founded a baseball team in Greenbelt called the Senators (later renamed the Orioles). It was an agricultural community until about 1950 when manufacturing began to increase as new jobs sprang up for workers in plastics and textiles plants across Maryland and Delaware. By 1990 there were more than 100 businesses here employing over 1,000 people; many are still in operation today including Jiffy Lube (the first gas station downtown), Belk department store which opened in 1961, Bethesda courthouse complex which included a law library before it closed in 1993-1994 and became home to One Stop Village mall which anchors the shopping center area nearby Today Greenbelt is primarily a residential community with small retail districts around its central square. [5],[6] At present there are only about 10 residents living within walking distance for most activities due to concerns over traffic congestion caused by high levels of vehicular traffic coming into town from surrounding counties etc......... Today's gridlock could easily be avoided if more people would take advantage of bicycling or walking paths that run through town....... According to Forbes Magazine article written in 2000 "Greenbelt's biggest attraction may not be all that great," but it continues "the fact that this sleepy little corner can boast scores of locally sourced boutiques makes it worth your time."
