It is located on the north side of Washington Heights and is bordered by Bethesda to the east, White Marsh to the south and Annapolis to the west. The population was 8,700 at the 2000 census. The name Greenbelt is derived from "Greenspring" which means "spring of trees." Greenbelt was first settled in 1824 when families from Lancaster Township relocated there from elsewhere in Prince George's County. The community grew rapidly after it was made part of Prince George's County in 1852. In 1870, a post office called Greenbelt was established and remained in operation until 1945. The community lies within two large business districts: One extends along US 301 between I-495 and US 36 (the Beltway) while the other encompasses most of eastern Montgomery County including much of Bethesda City Center/Gallaudet University Area as well as much of Bowie and Silver Spring. According to the United States Census Bureau, Greenbelt has a total area of , all of it land.

In 1951 it amalgamated with other communities in Prince George's County to form Greenbelt Township. In 1984 Greenbelt Township became an independent municipality and was renamed after Cecil B. DeMille Boulevard, which runs through centralPrince George's County from Takoma Park to Oxon Hill. The community has several shopping centers, including one that hosts Macy’s flagship store, Bloomingdale’s., which opened in 2000; JCPenney; Sears; Kmart; and Dollar Tree - all within walking distance of each other or just minutes away by car or bus ride from most parts of town. As part of its effort to reduce traffic congestion in its center, the township also built an expressway around it called Cecil B DeMille Boulevard Expressway that links most shopping areas with each other as well as White Flint Mall (the only large mall still standing within Green Belt) and two new light rail stations: One near Interstate 395 (a mile northeast of town center) serving stop #1 on Metrobus lines 1 & 2 operated by Maryland Transit Administration (MDTA) while Stop #2 provides access to Line 4 trains running out of White Flint Mall served by Conrail services until 2019 when those trains were replaced by trolley buses operated by Baltimore Light Rail Authority
