Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Ft. Meade, MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original name for Greenbelt was "Winchester". When Winchester built a sawmill here in 1792 it became known as Greenbelt because of the green belt around the mill site. In 1866 Greenbelt became an incorporated municipality with its own government and court system. Greenbelt residents were among the first to resist Ulysses S. Grant's invasion of Mexico in 1846 and they formed a militia to protect themselves from retaliation. The first post office in Greenbelt was established in 1857 and named after General Lafayette Hill (1774-1843). A school was constructed on what is now First Street in 1865 and named after Drs. Samuel Cooper and Augustus Brownell who served as Principals of that school from 1862 until their death in 1902. From 1870 until 1914 Greenbelt had one daily newspaper, "The Gazette" which ceased publication due to financial difficulties; however, local residents continue to send news updates online using various web services including email newsletters or Facebook pages

Greenbelt is bordered by Bowie to the north and east, Takoma Park to the south, Frederick to the west and Bethesda to the northwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Greenbelt was John Smith in 1784. In 1801, Greenbelt became part of Prince George's County and was laid out as a township. The first post office in Greenbelt opened on October 9, 1802. On June 14, 1810, Greenbelt incorporated as a city under the name of Baltimore; it remained an unincorporated community until 1915 when it became part of Prince George's County government. In 1916-1917 during World War I there were many munitions dumps around town which resulted in some cleanup operations that took place over several months starting on May 1st 1916 and finishing on July 25th 1917 with an estimated cost of $2 million USD . This project included excavating over 1400 feet (500 meters) beneath ground where munitions had been stockpiled for use during World War I
