Greenbelt, Maryland is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 33,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what is now Greenbelt were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1655 and named their town "Bruges". They built a small farmstead and took up fishing and hunting as their mainstay activities. A few years later, they decided to make the move to a larger community where they could grow crops and raise livestock. In 1795, when Baltimore became an independent state, Greenbelt was included within its boundaries. The citizens of Baltimore lobbied for the town to be annexed into Prince George's County so that it would have more facilities for education and commerce; however, this effort failed. In 1875, after decades of being ignored by both Prince George's County officials and Baltimore residents alike, the Maryland General Assembly appropriated $10 million dollars towards creating Marylebone Comprehensive Plan – which would include Greenbelt – as part of efforts to promote new development in southern Anne Arundel County (now suburban Howard University). This occurred during an era when rural areas were being rapidly transformed into large urban centers due to railroad construction and other technological advancements. The city has experienced some growth since then: In 1990 it had only 15 residents; by 2000 it had over 100; by 2005 it had over 200; by 2008 it had over 300; and by 2010 it had over 330 occupants. Despite these impressive totals, much work still needs to be done before Greenbelt can become a thriving metropolis like its neighbors: For instance, there are no public transportation options available outside of walking or biking; many homes are unoccupied because their owners cannot afford significant renovations or repairs; job opportunities for people with disabilities are limited or nonexistent; parks are sparsely populated or underdeveloped;; infrastructure such as streetlights and sidewalks remain rudimentary compared to those found in more developed neighborhoods nearby; furthermore, lack of affordable housing does not appear imminent given current market conditions

Greenbelt, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Howard metropolitan area. Greenbelt was founded in 1884 as a small agricultural community on the north side of Chevy Chase Corner Road (now U.S. Route 1) between present-day Bowie and Silver Spring neighborhoods. The name was chosen to evoke "a meadow carpeted with green grass," according to one account.[1] In 1916, Greenbelt became an incorporated town after being approved by the state legislature; it had been proposed as a referendum question in 1911 but failed to gain approval from voters. At its incorporation, Greenbelt adopted a city charter that granted it certain powers not possessed by other towns in the county. These included fire protection and police services within its borders and exclusive rights to sell water for municipal use only within its boundaries. In 1938, when Prince George's County became an organized municipality under state law no longer allowing towns to exist without voter approval, Greenbelt lost all these rights and reverted back to township status. However, due to community support it reemerged as an incorporated town once again in 1984; currently it has more than 6500 residents within its boundaries despite township status.[2] The history of Greenbelt can be traced back to 1884 when farmers established themselves along what is now US 1 near Bowie and Silver Spring neighborhoods on land they had acquired from Native Americans who had long inhabited this area before that time. The early pioneers were mostly Englishmen who arrived during the post-Revolutionary period seeking new opportunities in America; many came through Baltimore or Washington D.C., where they developed natural resources such as coal reserves and timberland around those areas which would later become known as Metro DC suburbs like Bethesda/Chevy Chase/Merritt Island etc..[3][4] One account suggests that local boy John Fenton may have been among those early settlers: After arriving in America he went West Side Market shopping for provisions while his family lived off farm until he found work driving teams of oxen over snow drifts down Pennsylvania Avenue into Georgetown where he unloaded goods at Mr Fillmore’s mercantile store (now known as Amazon) on October 29th 1885:[5],[6] One year earlier a group of men led by Captain John Waddell had successfully campaign for incorporation of what would become Greenbelt Township on November 3rd 1883 with much fanfare including speeches by then Congressman James Kinsley which set off rallies throughout Montgomery County including at Luther Seminary located just across Potomac Street from today’s Blackmon Place Shopping Center – “the first white college west of Baltimore”[7],[8] This event signaled both national significance given President Grover Cleveland’s recent visit there – seen locally as another sign that things were changing – and local pride because most people living near Mt Airy knew their names even if they could not spell them! By 1886 about 350 acres (160 ha) lay adjacent east of present day Bowie Boulevard with potential development envisioned including mills used for grinding corn raw or refined into flour,[9],[10][11][12], farmsteads housing up to 20 head of cattle each,[13],[14],[15], blacksmith shops(later served also by harness shop), wagon works(later served also by carpenter shop), stores (later serving also general merchandise), schoolhouse(later serve also as parish church), cistern (eventually replaced needs potable water system)[16], four miles long streetcar line running northwest from Mount Vernon Cemetery Extension towards downtown Washington Streetside via present day Naylor Road leading southeast out terminating at future intersection with I-495 outside Arlington County proper).[17]; some facilities built contemporaneously such as parsonage or gristmill still standing today include Masonic Lodge No 2 & Masonic Hall #1 remainsarguably one OF THE FIRST GAS STATION MORTGAGES IN AMERICA RENTED BY A MASONIC lodge AGENDA COULD REVEAL THAT GREENBELT WAS ONE OF THE VERY FIRST ELECTRONIC COMMUNITIES WITH WIRELESS SERVICE INCLUDING CHARTER SERVICE FROM EARLY 1920′S onward !!!!!
