It was founded in 1872 by Presbyterian missionaries as a community on the then current site of Greenbelt Park. It became an incorporated town in 1959. The townsite of Greenbelt was purchased by the federal government in 1872 as part of its efforts to provide land for settlers in what is now Prince George's County. The original town plat included 4 square miles (10 square kilometers). By 1870, when it had a population of just 10 people, Greenbelt had developed into one of the most heavily populated communities west of Baltimore. In 1957, Greenbelt voters passed a resolution proclaiming themselves an "open-air city." This designation made it one of only a few U.S. towns that have never been subject to zoning regulations set by city governments and instead are governed by municipal ordinances and laws enacted by their own governing bodies – typically village or boroughs. Greenbelt contains over 100 businesses and employs over 350 individuals including 50% women wage earners and nearly all service-sector jobs such as police officers and firefighters. In addition to its large number of businesses, Green Belt also has several dozen small shops and restaurants serving local cuisine as well as two movie theaters and two professional sports teams: the Washington Nationals baseball team and the Baltimore Ravens football team which play at M&T Bank Stadium outside downtown Baltimore each season; both teams have since moved to Camden Yards stadium within nearby Towson after decade-long protests from residents about noise levels from their games
