Greenbelt is a town in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,453 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 as a small farming community on the southern edge of Old Fordham Road and became an incorporated town in 1951. Greenbelt is located near Bowie and Middletown. The first European to visit what is now Greenbelt was Captain John Smith on September 3, 1607 when he explored the area that would become Carroll County. Heading up the Potomac River and looking for land where he thought there might be riches waiting to be discovered, he noted "a good many miles (of course) [were] lies without us but full of rich pastures".[2] In 1784, General James Knyphausen ordered Major General David Hunter to build Fort Frederick at present day Bowie Creek mouth on Craney Island in order to protect Fort Caroline from British attack. The fort served as an outpost until 1795 when it burned down due to faulty construction. After the failed attempt by Sir Guy Carleton to retake Fort Caroline from the British in 1798, Knyphausen replaced Hunter with Colonel Edward Braddock and moved his headquarters from Bowie Creek mouth to nearby White House Point on Catoctin Island which later became Georgetown.[3][4] In 1800, after years of development work led by Father Gabriel Richard de Pastoureau* (* born October 12th, 1754 near Fayetteville MD), Greenbelt's first post office opened its doors with mail service between Baltimore and Washington D.C., beginning on July 1st of that year.[5][6] Father Richard's dream came true when his parishioners subscribed $1 per month towards building a long-term storage shed for church supplies which they used until 1881 when they finally completed a new brick church dedicated to St Joseph,[7][8][9] one of several churches built followingFatherRichard's death in 1853[10]. Father Richard also started constructing what would become Our Lady of Mount Carmel School around this time; it opened its doors for classes on May 10th 1855.[11][12][13] A fire destroyed much of downtown Greenbelt in 1909; resulting in much reconstruction including enlarging both our Lady's School[14] and Saint Anthony Hall Church which replaced what had been lost during that Fire! Reverend John Casey began efforts towards creating a green belt around central Greensboro Heights after seeing some potential acres undeveloped next door while preaching services at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel High School - these lands hosted Trinity Episcopal Church today as well as schools like Zeneca Elementary & Middle Schools - all while keeping Father Casey's vision alive! Reverend Casey successfully lobbied state legislators into approving legislation establishing a 2 ½ acre green belt around Central Greensboro Heights within 15 years making GREENBELT INCorporated! This designation happened just weeks before Congressman Elijah Cummings announced plans for CONNECTING THE HOUSES OF GREENBELT WITH THE METRO LINE – further illustrating how important Greenbelt has become over time! * Reverend John Casey (born December 14th 1954)[15],[16], Priest
