Greenbelt is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,813 at the 2010 census. It is located within the Washington metropolitan area. The name "Greenbelt" is derived from the thicket of trees that are found around the town center and along most of its major streets. The trees were used as fuel for heating homes during the cold winter months and also to provide cover for farmers when missiles were tested near Greenbelt in 1951-1952. In 1932, Greenbelt was incorporated as a township. In 1955 it became an unincorporated community. On November 5, 2008, it merged with neighboring Bowie Township to become one municipality with a total population of 12,567 people

Greenbelt, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The town was founded on July 1, 1872, by settlers from the town of Bowie in Prince George's County. Greenbelt was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1904. As of the 2010 census, the population of Greenbelt was 9,715. The first residents of Greenbelt were farmers who arrived from southeastern Virginia and eastern Maryland in 1871. The land that now makes up Greenbelt was part of Hunting Valley Manor before it was donated to Prince George's County in 1872 by General Sir Walter Scott and other landowners. The original building that stands today on Main Street in Greenbelt was built around 1850 as a school house. In 1902, the original City Hall building burned down and had to be rebuilt using funds raised from private donations. In 1907, local businessmen erected a new bank building which still stands today on Market Street in downtown Greenbelt. This bank served as the nucleus for what would become one of PrinceGeorge's county's largest commercial institutions – Bankers Trust Company – which opened its doors in 1912 at 5th and Market Streets. Greenbelt remained an agricultural community until after World War II when people started moving into the city for work opportunities in nearby Baltimore or Washington D.C.. Today, much of what once constituted rural areas withinPrince George’s County has been redeveloped into dense suburbs with high-rise buildings and shopping centers near major highways such as I-95/I-495/Upper Merion Road; Montgomery County Parkway; and Route 208/Route 726 (the Beltway).
Greenbelt was originally a part of Prince George's County, Maryland. It was annexed by Baltimore in 1871. Greenbelt is now a single-town within Baltimore City.
