In 1849, General David Dixon explored the area that would later become Montgomery County and discovered coal mines on what is now Northumberland Avenue just outside present-day Gaithersburg; Dixon decided to name these mines "Dixon Mines". Coal production began shortly thereafter in what became known as "the Dixon Mines Belt" around Gaithersburg proper; by 1860 over 50 miles of tracks had been built transporting coal from these mines across Montgomery CountyGMail).
