Gaithersburg is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 27,948 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Prince George's County and second-most populous municipality in Maryland after Baltimore City. Gaithersburg is located on the Potomac River south of Washington D.C., and north of Fredericktown and Takoma Park. The name Gaithersburg derives from John Gaither, who arrived in 1776 as one of the first settlers to enter what is now Prince George's County. The town was founded by General James Kieft and his wife Elizabeth west of Fredericktown on land that he had purchased from the Lenape Indians for £230 sterling (equivalent to $). In 1831,Gaithersburg became part of Fredericktown Township which was then divided into two townships: Northumberland Township to the east and South Cumberland Township to the west. When South Cumberland Township was disbanded in 1871 it became an independent incorporated village called Gathersville which later merged with Gaithersburg into a city on December 1st,1977 under Mayor Harry Laughlin Jr.. In February 1861 Major General Winfield Scott decided that territory between Fort McHenry on their right bank and Harper’s Ferry on their left should be developed as a new military post known as Scott’s Point; this area included much of what is now Montgomery County including Gaithersburg – although only about 8% of its present-day acreage ever came within Ft. McHenry boundaries . On March 15th 1861 Colonel Nathaniel Pritchard reported that construction had commenced at Scott’s Point “on lots donated by citizens thereof for this purpose” but no further progress could be made until “a proper road may be built through these woods so that troops might move therewith without any inconvenience or danger to themselves or others” On May 2nd 1861 Captain James Haysen ordered all civilian males over 21 years old living within 5 miles (8 km) radius of Ft. Monroe to leave for fear they would become militarily attached to Confederate forces if they did not return home soon A week later Captured Confederate Brigadier General Jno Ewing ordered all females aged 16-50 years old captured along with any male over 21 years old who did notdisperse into slavery within 24 hours or face execution Although some women managed to escape by hiding under trees or offroad bridges during those days there were many woman raped/murdered near Ft Monroe while being held captive . Consequently most men who lived near Ft Monroe when it became garrisoned by Confederate Forces also ended up becoming enslaved By January 1862 almost all civilian males living within 10 miles (16 km) radius either side of Ft Monroe hadeither been evacuated or were free men fighting for Southern Independence ) However because Northern troops still controlled much surrounding territory Union Army commanders decided notto evacuate anyone outside 10 miles (16 km) radius where they felt there would be no immediate threat
