On November 9, 1792, Mr. Hargrave sold 8 acres (3 ha) for £60 to John Chapman who also founded Annapolis Junction about two miles south-west of present day Gaitherburg on Catoctin Creek Road as well as two other small settlements: Westover Heights and Middlebrook Station The town eventually grew around this early agricultural community which became known for its high quality produce - apples were especially popular - along withits close proximity to Williamsburg where Parliament was seated at that time. However, due to economic difficulties brought about by World War II and subsequent recession following the war; Gaithersburg lost much of its manufacturing base however it retains a strong Agricultural sector including livestock production as well as many small businesses such as fabric stores and hardware stores which have thrived over time In 1962 when Washington County merged into Prince George's County;Gaithersburg became one of six communities within that newly formed county On May 12th 1968 through legislation approved by then Governor Albert Vanker he designated Greenbelt Township adjacent to both Upper Darby Township east of Interstate 95 (I-95 now forms eastern border betweenPrince George'sCountyand MontgomeryCounty) as part of Gaithersburg annexed area .Greenbelt Township contains more than 6000 homes built since 1968 across various housing developments including Andrew Homes providing affordable housing for low income families .Gillette Stadium/Dome opened in August 2002 replacing Walter Reed Army Medical Center which closed approximately 20 years earlier on September 25th 1984 after serving military patients from MD campuses throughout central Maryland
