Gaithersburg is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 26,539 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Gaithersburg is located on the west bank of the Anacostia River and has a total area of 17 square miles (46 km2). The first permanent settler in what would become Gaithersburg was John Nicholson in 1784. A small farming community near modern-day Gaithersburg developed until 1810 when General Robert Eichelberger established Fort Nixonsborough on the east side of Anacostia River to prevent Native Americans from raiding his farmsteads upstream. By 1814 there were two villages - Nicholson and Annapolis - with 7 residents each. In 1821, General James Longstreet ordered Major John Pyle to establish a military post at Annapolis Court House which became known as "Pyle's Landing". With additional forts built at Whitemarsh and elsewhere along the river system during this period, Gaithersburg reached its peak population density of around 100 people per square mile (38/km2). However, by 1830 it had decreased to about 75 people per square mile (29/km2), reflecting steady decline inriver traffic due to American Revolutionary War efforts to suppress Indian trade and raids by British forces In 1847 Montgomery County was created from Prince George's County; thus much land within present-day Gaithersburg boundaries was added including parts of what are now Bowie and Frederick townships. The incorporations for both precincts occurred on March 3, 1847: Ward 2 Congregationalist Church – founded by Elijah Howe – Incorporation #1; Ward 3 Baptist Church – founded by Amos Chandler – Incorporation #2 Gaithersburg experienced an influx of new settlers following World War II as many families left rural Maryland for wartime jobs in northern Virginia and other areas ofthe North Atlantic territories. The wartime boom helped generate new businesses such as apparel plants, plastics manufacturers, candy companies etc., but also led to increased prices and traffic congestion on Route 10 which stretched from downtown Bethesda through Gaitherburg out into Upper Darby Township where most homes were still attached to farms orchards or single-family residences with few streets connecting them together . This situation began to change after 1955 when US Interstate 95 bridge construction started just south of town limits; I-95 greatly increased access into central Prince George's County while reducing travel time between Bethesda and Gaitherburg making town center more accessible . Consequently , although growth continued slowly throughout the 1960s & 1970s due largely to high crime rates not caused by increased visitation or commerce generated outsideGaithersburg but rather problems inherent with newly constructed infrastructure affecting all age groups & income levels who frequently encountered gridlock while driving into town seeking services ubiquitous today before exiting without having made any purchases& paying taxes increase their real estate values considerably

Gaithersburg was first settled by Germans in 1784 as a small town called Goshen Township. In 1821, George Washington founded Friendship Heights as his home village on what is now White Flint Boulevard, just outside of Gaithersburg's limits. Friendship Heights becameGaithersburg after he named it for General James Andrew "Giants" Gaithers, who had served with distinction during the War for Independence. On July 25, 1827,WASHINGTON granted land to James Muhlenberg (1795 – 1865), an entrepreneur from Pennsylvania who purchased 8 square miles (21 km2) along Potomac River near present-day Gaithersburg from John Nicholson (1689 – 1762). Muhlenberg built two trading posts here: one on First Street West near today's Eastern Market; and another on High School Road northeast of Park Ridge Cemetery where he established Adam Millinery Company in 1796. The mills processed woolens into finished clothing for people living within reasonable driving distance of Baltimore or Philadelphia but also exported raw materials to other factories around America via wagons pulled by horse teams up North then down again through GW Parkway until they reached Baltimore at Point Lookout before heading back downriver to reach Lancaster Mills some 10 miles downstream near Yorktown Bottom Factory until finally reaching Pennsylania at Westville before continuing their journey all the way back to Camden Bridge inside Maryland adjacent to Harford County boundary before dropping everything and coming ashore - very much like our modern day wagons drawn by horses - at East Landing just beyond present day Gaitherburg Creek which formed Wimpole Island when US 1 was rerouted aroundpresent day Calvertstown Lake following Catoctin Mountain The original millstones were quarried nearby on Round Hill Avenue betweencurrent-day Rockville Centre Drive and Calvertstown Road while other grinding equipment such as flour separators were built at various locations including Northumberland Barracks overlooking Potomac River northwest of town prior to 1800 when most flour production shifted away from round stones towards more efficient flat stones using water power starting with Roanoke Flour Mill operated by David Dixon in 1800 & later Winchester Flour Mill operated by Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail circa 1825–1830 followed by Lombard Flour MILL opened about 1830 moved operations over large area including entire section now included withinCityofGaithersburg Historic District renamedNationalFlourRecords Museum late last century In addition extensive brickyarding took place here producing many beautiful homes both single family dwellings/condos as well as high rise buildings associated with Northern Virginia suburbs such as Laurel Hills etc .
