It is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to The Gaithersburg School District. The town was founded in 1798 by General James Neely Howard and named for his father-in-law, Colonel John Gaither. It became an incorporated town in 1881, and a city in 1907. In 1970, it merged with neighboring Bowie to form what is now Montgomery County. The name "Gaithersburg" derives from Colonel John Gaither's farmstead called "Gaultier". The first settlers arrived here in 1798 as part of General James NeelyHoward's army during the French and Indian War; they were people of Scots-Irish extraction who had fled Ireland before that war. They built log cabins near present day Gaithersburg Cemetery where they lived until after their war service ended in 1799. In 1801, when Prince George Washington's troops arrived at Fort Meade on the Potomac River for the inaugural campaign against France, they encampment camped near what is now downtown Gaitherburg. General Washington approved of this location and ordered Colonel John Gaither to build a small fortification here which he did soon afterwards - this became known as Fort Neely Howard (later renamed Fort George). A group of European Americans led by Captain Samuel Morse came overland from Baltimore during Mayfair Week in 1807 and explored this area northwest of today's Bowie Street between York Road and Mount Vernon Avenue – they found good land here for farming but no water power available so they abandoned their project. This early exploration helped spur development around today's intersection of I-270/Mt Vernon Ave./Gaithersburg Pike/National Highway 7 – see map below: In 1811, Major General Israel Putnam moved his forces upriver from Fredericktown Landing on MD 16 near modern day White Flint to take position alongriver opposite Ft Meade; putting these defenses into effect were Lt Col David Cameron (the Commandant at Md 16)and Majors Archibald Maclean & David Forbes with about 100 militiamen under Captains William Haddock & Elijah Hitchcock . After several weeks’ hard fighting by Putnam against superior British forces under MajorGeneral Hector MacDonald some 8 miles upstream at Point Lookout (modern Elkridge),Putnam withdrew his forces January 10th 1863 after successful engagements at Philpotts Ford Bridge February 9th 1863 east side Filbert Creek thence southwesterly to Windmill Hill April 6th 1863& again January 15th 1865 when he reached Greencastle heights east side Windmill Hill thence northwesterly to point where Beaverdam Creek empties into Loch Laoghaire Bay March 20th 1865 – putative site where Battle Of Gettysburg took place July 4 1861 On November 5th 1800 Geoge Waddell sold 60 acres on high ground northeast of present day Bowie Street corner Light House Rd., bounded by High Plains Road Extension west boundary line & Old Georgetown Rd., lot now included within City limits
