The community offers a variety of recreational opportunities including golfing, boating, fishing, swimming and hiking; as well as educational institutions such as Gaithersburg Community College (GCC), Montgomery Ward School District #1 (MWSD) and Bowie High School (BH). It also houses several large commercial businesses including IBM World Services Center at Gateway Park North & I-495 (the new home for FedEx) and American Electric Power Company’s Brown Station Shopping Center which opened in 2006 on Route 66 across from Bowie High School

Gaithersburg is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 17,392 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. Gaithersburg is located on the Susquehanna River and is bordered by Rockville to the east and west, Bethesda to the north, Gaithersburg to the south-west, and Prince George's County to the south-east. The Susquehanna River forms Gaithersburg's southeastern border. The first settler in what is now Gaithersburg was James Hance who arrived in1755 from North Carolina. Hance founded a small community called Harveys Mills on Elk Run which he named for his father-in-law John Harper (1672–1743). In 1775, General Braddock's army destroyed Hance's mills in retaliation for revolutionary activities in Maryland conducted by Captain John Smith of Virginia. In 1821 Ephraim Mifflin bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land along with 10 negro slaves from Nicholas Schoolcraft which he renamed "Mifflin Township". He started a blacksmith shop there and built a home that still stands Today it is known as Mifflin House Museum and Gaithersburg Historical Society has restored it as part of their museum program. A post office was established at Gaithersburg on November 12, 1814, under the name "Haltom". It was renamed "Gaithersburg" on October 14th of that year by Act No 9 of 1834 after Admiral David Dixon Porter who had become Commandant General Washington’s staff during his residency at Annapolis Royal Army Barracks from 1802 until his death in 1805. On December 12th 1861 Georgia Confederate general BraxtonBragg burned down Ulysses S Grant’s house near present day Bowie Street NW in order to capture supplies being brought into Baltimore through northern Maryland ahead of Union siege bombardment planned for February 1st 1862; Grant losses were severe especially since many civilians were killed or taken captive including children playing outside when Bragg approached homes early one morning while all under cover! The house still stands today but most damage has been done to its roof line due to weathering over time
