They explored what they thought was an uninhabited island and named it Islip after one of their companions on board ship, James Islip. At that time there were no settlements within present day Gaithersburg Township or within any range of hills which lay immediately around it; but by virtue of its situation as a crossroads between two great centres of trade and population—Montgomery County and Prince George's County—Gaithersburg became not only one of the most important towns in both counties but also one of the most fashionable centers in America for many years past. In 1814 Abraham Lincoln was born hereabouts; four years later came General Ulysses S. Grant from Illinois; then came President Andrew Johnson with his family; three years later Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln died hereabouts; then General Robert Ewing (1868-1937) who built much of downtown Gaitherburg before he became Dean of Fordham University; finally Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), who preached hereabouts during 1964’s “ March on Washington” campaign rallies that helped achieve passage of the Civil Rights Act while Mayor Of Atlanta William Hagerstown led protesters against segregation inside Druid Hill Park—all without ever leaving his home townhome at 1224 College Avenue! So many people have passed through this community over so many years that it could easily become lost among all those other names given to places like Bethesda, Silver Spring or Fredericktown—but Gaithersburg has always been something special because it has always been its own entity despite all these amalgamations over time! And even though some things have changed such as population size or location within Montgomery County, nothing can truly take away what makes Gaitherburg special: its vibrant sense of community where everyone knows each other well enough to share stories and laughs together every day!
