Gaithersburg is located within the Washington Metropolitan Area and is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Washington metropolitan statistical area. The first permanent settler in what would become Gaithersburg was Captain John Smith who arrived with his wife and three children on April 14, 1792 from North Carolina. At that time there were no towns in Prince George's County and all citizens were farmers or fishermen. The first school was built on Main Street near where it remains today. John Nicholson (1768-1837), father of Reginald Nicholson (1881-1940) organized a group of men to purchase two hundred acres (120 hectares) of land west of the Susquehanna River at what is now Mount Vernon Place in 1802. They named their community "Newtown," after John Nicholson's birthplace, Newtownshire, Scotland. Newtown grew slowly until 1814 when Sir William Clark donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) to create a township which became Gaithersburg Township on February 3, 1814 . On January 1st 1865 General Orders No 2 issued by Ulysses S Grant created Alexandria Township adjacent to Montgomery County and included much of what is now eastern Prince George's County including present day Gaithersburg Township and parts of western Montgomery County

That year also saw the opening of what is now known as Gaithersburg Elementary School and eventually became one of Maryland’s largest private schools with over 1,500 students in its freshman through sophomore years alone. One milestone that occurred during this time was when Dr. John Fenton moved from Baltimore to become Headmaster at Gaithersburg High School and helped solidify the school’s position as one of Maryland’s leading public high schools – later becoming one of America’s most selective feeders for Ivy League colleges and universities.
