In 1835, Colt founded the Colt Arms Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut and began producing pistols. He also started selling barrels for shotguns and other firearms. In 1836, he created the .45 caliber handgun and marketed it as a weapon of war. The popularity of the handgun led to its widespread distribution throughout America and Europe. In 1857, Colt produced his last pistol before his death. The company continued to produce firearms until 1907 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company

Gaithersburg is located on the north bank of the Potomac River east of Washington D.C., about 20 miles (32 km) west of Baltimore and 10 miles (16 km) south of Frederick. Gaithersburg was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1795 as a small farming village called Newtown on the western edge of present-day Gaithersburg Township. In 1872, it became one of six townships in Montgomery County; it was annexed by Washington D.C. as part of Prince Georges County in 1898. In 1921, Gaithersburg became one of five cities included within the newly created Metropolitan Washington Authority; it remained an independent municipality until its merger with Washington D.C.. The population peaked at 54,871 during World War II but declined to 34,815 by 2000 because of increased suburban development around town and decline in manufacturing jobs throughout central Maryland due to unionization and other factors.[1] However, recent economic growth has resumed and total employment now reaches over 100,[2]000[3] making Gaitherburg one of southern Maryland's fastest growing cities.[4][5][6] The namesake for this large town comes from General George Armstrong Custer who fought with distinction during American Civil War under General Robert E Lee against Ulysses S Grant at Armageddon Plains near Fredericktown before being killed there December 21st 1865 while leading his brigade into battle against Union forces commanded by Major General Ulysses S Grant himself just south of Fredericktown across from where modern day Gaithersburg stands today - thus providing what would later become known as "Armageddon Plains".

General Washington's headquarters were located here for six days before he moved them to Alexandria, Virginia. In 1814, General Robert E Lee led Confederate forces against Union forces during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Many civilians died in this engagement because of artillery fire that caused major damage to homes and businesses. After the battle, Union troops burned many homes and buildings in town as part of their victory celebration. The population of Gaithersburg increased rapidly after World War II when new housing developments began to be built throughout the city limits. These developments included Gaithersburg Village which became one of the most popular shopping areas in Maryland due to its close proximity to military bases and other important facilities. The development also created problems for environmental protection because large numbers of jobs were located within walking distance of some high-traffic areas such as I-270 and Fedexway Boulevard
