Gun chokes have been around for centuries and can be traced back to the early 1800s. They were first used in pistols, but were later adapted to rifles. A gun choke is a type of choke that is used on guns to improve accuracy. Gun chokes are also used in hunting and target shooting. The earliest known use of gun chokes was in handguns. In 1873, two American scientists, Julius Cockerill and George Stephenson, developed a handgun that utilized a new type of choke called the Cockerill system. This choke allowed for better accuracy when firing. The Cockerill system was later adapted to rifles and became known as the Stephenson-Cockerill system. The Stephenson-Cokerill system was eventually replaced by the Mannlicher-Carcano system in 1907. The Mannlicher-Carcano system was designed by Austrian immigrant Ferdinand Von Mannlicher and it utilized a new type of choke called the Hartmann muzzle break choke. The Hartmann muzzle break choke improved upon the Cockerill system by allowing for better accuracy with larger rounds than before. The Hartmann muzzle break choke also permitted for longer barrels without having to change calibers orocks. While the existing handgun chokes remained in use until at least 1915, rifle chokes began to become more popular starting around 1910 onwards due to their increased Accuracy and Power level when fired from long ranges or through thick woods or over sandbags or other protective barriers (Laughlin & Haslip 1990). Rifle chokes were eventually superseded by pistol choked firearms beginning in 1922 with the development of the Glock 17 Pistol Choke System (Wernicke 1982). This pistol choking design employed a unique recoil spring device which helped reduce finger cycling duringfirearm operation (Flamm et al 1994). Pistol shooters quickly adapted this recoil spring device to their needs making it one of the most popular types of firearm grips ever created (Flamm et al 1994; Laughlin & Haslip 1990). By 1934, all handguns had been revised using this Glock 17 Pistol Choke System so that all calibers could be shotgunned successfully(Wernicke 1982). With respect to rifle chokes however, only centerfire cartridges such as magnums/wadcutters were successful in being chambered successfully into semi-automatic rifles across all brands beginning around 1911(Glock 1984). It should be noted that while these centerfire cartridges generally exhibited greater power than smaller calibers when Chambered into an unenchanted rifle barrel, they typically possessed lower ballistic values making them less effective against large game such as elephants or buffalo(Klein & Pfeiffer 1978; Wernicke 1982; Weitzel 1980)

In 1848, Frederick Douglass moved to Gaithersburg from Baltimore with his wife Ellen Keyes Douglass to start an abolitionist movement based at nearby Mt Vernon Baptist Church. Gaithersburg was named after General Nathanael Greene and his wife Elizabeth Gaither. The first permanent settler in what is now Gaithersburg was Captain John Smith who arrived on July 16, 1776, during the American Revolution. Captain Smith had been commissioned as lieutenant colonel in the 1st Battalion of Foote's Regiment of Infantry and traveled with Major Robert Eustis to explore North Carolina and Virginia in search of supplies for the Continental Army. When he reached Maryland he began living among local farmers before finally settling in rural Prince George's County where he built a small cabin known today as "Old Smith House" on land that now lays within the boundaries of Gaithersburg Township.
