This ordinance also allowed for pistolfights between citizens and animals as well as organized matches between different rifle clubs or societies. In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell visited Gaithersburg while on his way to Gettysburg to lead his army against Union General George McClellan. On October 14th that year Confederate General Robert Ewell skirmished with United States Cavalry near Little Rock Creek Bridge over Frederick River outside of Gaitherburg; this event is now known as the Battle of Little Rock Creek Bridge. During the battle Confederate General Robert Ewell's horse was killed under him; he therefore lost some support within his army for continuing the fight after losing his horse

It is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by Frederick to the south, Carroll County to the east, and Montgomery County to the west. The land that now makes up Gaithersburg was first settled by Europeans in 1775 as part of what are now two jurisdictions: Frederick County and Prince George's County. The town of Gaithersburg was founded in 1811 as a port town on Harpers Ferry Creek between Frederick and Carroll Counties, which became its primary commercial center after those counties were merged into Prince George's County. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period as cotton plantations were developed along both sides of Harpers Ferry Creek. By 1871, Gaithersburg had a population of 602 people; it reached 1,000 residents only after World War II when increased demand for housing led to an increase in development around downtownGaitherburg and elsewhere intown. In 1951 local officials formedPrince Georges Regional Planning Commission which oversaw growth inresidential areas throughoutthecountyandcreated dozens of new streetscapesand boulevards withintownlimits; these improvements have sincebeen adopted by other communitiesin incorporated areaofthecountythathavegrownrapidlyduringthelast 50 years or so. During World War II many GM plants were built here includingzie6 (now known as General Motors Research), Raytheon Missile Center (now Lockheed Martin), McDonnell Douglas Aircraft plant (now Boeing) and Hughes Aircraft Company plant (now Boeing). These plants produced millions of dollars' worth of goods that helped support American war production efforts. Afterward several companies left or moved out - among them Ford Motor Company - but most notably Kaiser Permanente remained until its acquisition by Google parent company Motorola in 2011 Prior to this changeover several clinics operated atGM plants nearby such as Johns Hopkins Hospital while larger factories like Bethlehem Steel Complex produced items like asphalt and girders
