In 1825, Goodrich opened his own shop on High Street and continued to produce firearms until 1861. TheGoodrich store was also home to one of the first rifle ranges in America, located just down the street from the business. It wasn't until 1868 that Goodrich's son John started manufacturing pistols in addition to rifles and shotguns. By 1883, John had moved his company to what is now known as Massanutten Road in Gaithersburg.While handgun manufacturers were scattered throughout rural Maryland for much of this time period, Charles Goodrich & Sons remain an important part of Gun enthusiast history in Gaithersburg because they were responsible for developing America’s first cartridge-operated shotgun – the Single Action Army (SA Bailey).

Gaithersburg, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 26,539 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Prince George's Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was founded in 1795 by General Nathaniel Gaither and his wife Anne Christenberry Gaither. The first settlers were Presbyterians who had come from Scotland. After years of hard work and much sacrifice, the community became a thriving small farming town with a school, churches, businesses and families. By 1830 the population had increased to over 100 residents and by 1850 it had reached 300 people. However, due to economic challenges like disease and drought, Gaithersburg faced decline for many years until it experienced its greatest prosperity during World War II when it became an ammunition production center for the war effort. Gaithersburg rebounded following the war and has since become an industrialized community with several large corporations headquartered here including Northrop Grumman Corporation (now Lockheed Martin), Boeing Company (now Boeing Co.), Intel Xeon Processor Group (now Intel Corp.), Syngenta AG (now Monsanto), Comcast Corporation (NBCUniversal) and others. Today Gaithersburg remains one of America’s most vibrant towns with robust cultural attractions such as its world-renowned arts organizations such as The Gallery at National Naval Air Museum or the nearby Frederick Douglass National Historic Site; exciting new development such as Hillview Commons; thriving small businesses; high quality schools – both public and private – which continue to educate locals young and old; beautiful open spaces – perfect for outdoor activities like hiking or biking; rich history - from its beginnings as a small farming town to its current role as an industrial center;[and] many active citizens committed to making their community better every day.[1]
