By 1871 Gaithirsham had been renamed "Gaithersburg" after General Robert Ewing who had helped organize American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846). On October 25th 1865 during World War II an ammunition dump located near present-day Friendship Road served as one of two bombing sites for RAF Lakenheath Airfield which were used between 1944-1945 by German night bombers known as "Fliegerkreuzer Flaeming". On November 15th 1954 local residents successfully petitioned to become citizens of their own City under Virginia law No 134/1955 - this document designates that on December 5th 1955 Gaithersburg became a city withinPrinceGeorge'sCounty under Laws In Force At That Time As Of November 15th 1955 Following annexation by Montgomery County in 1967, much development took place around Interstate 270 until it was replaced by I-270 Expressway just south of town limits in 2002 when beltway construction began withinPrinceGeorge'sCounty resulting in increased traffic congestion aroundtown limit areas

The original name for this community was Maughamyngham which means "the place where we distilled whisky." When floods swept across Chesapeake Bay in 1814 swamping much of what was once Maughamyngham village they again changed their name to Gaithersburg after General John Forbes's army destroyed all crops near Fort Necessity on James River while besieging Baltimore during that year’s American Revolution (1775-1778). The first settler in what would become Gaithersburg was George Lewis who arrived about 1800 from Glamorganshire (now Llantrisant) on Anglesey Island off Wales with his family aboard HMS Bounty under Commodore James Cook when he explored British Columbia around 1787/8 according to contemporary sources[1]. With wider access to water resources following discovery of inland oil reserves discoveries along present–day Interstate 95 starting about 1859 led to increased interest among entrepreneurs within colonial America in developing lands west of Pennsylvania along I-95 corridor which included parts of today's Montgomery County southward into Prince George's County also known as Westmoreland Township until it merged into Frederick Township effective July 1st 1860[2].
