In 1865, Baltimore-born Dr. John H. Griggs and his brother Augustus Griggs founded the first medical dispensary in Gaithersburg, Maryland. They sold their dispensary to a group of businessmen in 1887. The Griggs brothers continued to operate their business until they died in 1927. In 1951, the First Presbyterian Church purchased the dispensary from the businessmen and kept it open as a church clinic. The First Presbyterian Church closed its doors in 1985 but reopened as a museum in 2002.
Gaithersburg is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 37,691 at the 2010 census. Gaithersburg is located on the Potomac River and is bordered by Bethesda to the north, Rockville to the east, Silver Spring to the south and Prince George's County to the west. The first European settlement in present-day Gaithersburg was made on October 17, 1681 by Captain John Smith of Virginia as part of his third expedition up the Potomac River. Captain Smith's group consisted of eight men and two horses under Major Nathaniel Bacon. The colonists built a log cabin named Fort Necessity which served as their winter quarters from November 1681-January 1682. In 1751 Governor James Tryon established a permanent military post at what is now known as "Gaithersburg Heights" on high ground between what are nowFairfax Avenue and Farm Road 827 about one mile north of present day Gaithersburg Boulevard. In 1757 Colonel Edward Braddock's army invaded North America and arrived at "Gaithersburg Heights" during its march through Pennsylvania towards Yorktown. On December 15, 1776 General Washington's army moved against British forces entrenched near Mount Vernon while General Monmouth led an operation against Washington's right flank at Germantown near modern day Bowie Street in Gaithersburg Township. Aftermath of Battle of Germantown resulted in over 100 American casualties with most dead within three miles of battle site where they lay unburied for many days before being buried again behind enemy lines under heavy artillery fire until relieved by reinforcements late that night. On January 3rd, 2017 nearly 120 years after this pivotal battle occurred residents in both Gaithersburg Township and Bowie Street neighborhood held a commemorative event officiated by Mayor LeRoy Easley III to mark World War II Veterans Day with games, music and food available for those who wished to attend including live history demonstrations from local WWII veterans organizations detailed oral histories from family members living memory addresses today: “The Battle Of Germantstown” Smokey Joe’s BBQ & Hamburgers 5408 Bowie St., Suite 209
