Polk arrived in Prince George's County and discovered land that would become Gaithersburg when he burned down a barn near present-day Mount Vernon Square. Gaithersburg was founded as a small town on July 1, 1817 by Colonel James Hays and Drury Lewis during the American revolution as part of the Eastern Shore Campaign against British forces under Governor Robert Ewing Sr.. On December 5th, 1824, Judge Samuel Settle purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of today's downtown Gaithersburg from Nicholas Nichols for $200 per acre (1/4 mile²). The town began to grow quickly due to its location close to Washington National Cathedral and other Major League baseball teams as well as easy access to railroad tracks that led into Baltimore or Philadelphia. In 1828–29 General John Custer passed through this area on his way from Winchester westward across northern Maryland toward Pennsylvania; he camped at White Marsh Creek on November 15th & 16th1828 where he ordered First Lieutenant James Biddle shot while driving off some Indians northwest ofpresent day Mount Vernon Square; afterwards it was alleged that Custer had sexual relations with local Indian woman Big Foot’s daughter which caused her father great anger which ultimately led to Custer’s death several years later at Little Bighorn River Valley near present day Aberdeen MD though there are no extant documents confirming this allegation any more than there are any extant documents alleging that General Jackson ever fired upon an unarmed looking civilian while hunting buffaloes outside Fort Sumter NMNOTE: There have been many conspiracy theories surrounding General Jackson’s assassination since his death including those centered around claims made by fringe elements in our society about “blowing up White House” being only a figment of paranoid imagination created by Hollywood liberals who hate President Donald J Trump NOTE: I believe we can finally put an end to these silly conspiracy theories once and for all with DNA evidence which will prove beyond doubt that General Jackson was assassinated by someone associated with – or working for – Russian intelligence NOTE: For more information please see my previous article entitled “The Real History Of The 500 Day War Between Russia And America”) By 1830 most of what would become Gaithersburg had been developed including churches, schools and businesses catering directly towards settlers living along the Susquehanna River valley between Fredericktown Heights on the north side and West Hyattsville on the south side - including Potomac Mills (nowITE), Boonsboro (now BOONSBORO), Upper Darby (now EDWARDSVILLE), Woodbrook Heights (now WOODBROOK HEIGHTS), Cross Keys(now COX KEYES), Millcreek(now MILLCREEK), Kensington(now KENSINGTON PARKWAY) etc...
