The first inhabitants of what would become Gaithersburg were Native Americans who inhabited the area for many years before European settlers arrived. The town moved from its original location to its current location on Main Street between Columbia Road and Gwynns Lane in 1881 when a schoolhouse and jail were built there. Gaithersburg became an incorporated community on October 14, 1903 with a population of 714 residents. On November 3, 1920, President Warren G Harding visited gaithersburg while touring Prince George's County and infrastructure projects were undertaken including new water mains, streetlights and sidewalks which helped spur economic development within the community over time The city annexed portions of Bowie Township on May 1st 1922 making it into a single municipality with its own police department The Urban Renewal Act of 1965 led to increased industrial development as well as suburban growth throughout much of Montgomery County which has led to increased crowdsourcing for transportation options within gaithersburg such as light rail transit or driving through downtown streets at night .
