The original home of the first post office in Gaithersburg was built near today's intersection of 11th Street and Ivey Avenue. In 1836, one of America’s first steamboats called "The Georgia" arrived at anchor at what is now Federal Landing on Thames River just east of present-day High School Road (Route 1). She had been sent by Major Robert Hoke to explore new water routes into Chesapeake Bay for shipping companies looking for new markets for their products following President Andrew Johnson’s decision not to sign an act authorizing Congress to provide appropriations for military operations against CSS Florida (then known as Alaskan iceberg). Gaithersburg experienced its economic heyday during World War II when production at several local industries helped make Gaithersburg one of America’s most prosperous municipalities. After the war ended, many factories closed down but others continued operation until they were forced out of business by technological advances such as television manufacturing begun in 1957 that made goods more affordable overseas than here at home.
