In 1838, it became part of what would later become Montgomery County; however, until 1861 it remained within Prince George's County. In 2003 referendum voters passed a bill annexing Carroll Township into Gaithersburg so that its residents could have easier access to public transportation outside the city limits. The population reached 100,927 in 2010 according to the U.S Census Bureau estimate which means that there are about 116 people per square mile (41/km²).
