After arriving here he went into partnership with John Whitehead who had come earlier that year from England to settle near Potomac River valley between Cumberland Valley east of Washington D."Elbert soon found himself at odds with Whitehead over land rights In 1775 he joined forces with Captain David Gisttner to overthrow Whitehead but they were forced out by Gisttner's superior forces led by Major General William Howe In late summer or fall of that year Elbert returned home to find his house burned down by angry settlers loyal to Howe He now partnered up once again with John Whitehead this time producing foodgrain which he shipped back across the Potomac into Virginia where it helped feed Continental Army troops during their winter campaign fighting against Patriot forces The following spring (1776) Elbert married Sarah Kerr who also came from Germany along side her sister Anna Maria Scharfenberg They built their first cabin on what is now called Elkridge Road outside present day Frederick City limits about 10 miles northeast of present day downtown . They operated this small cabin until about 1800 when they moved southward some 50 miles towards Patuxent River where they started building more permanent homes . By 1802 they had built four houses on Mount Pleasant Hill within present day central district boundaries . From here until about 1810 they continued moving westward but then stopped because white men started moving into their territory northward Elsert sold his holdings back east near Georgetown before finally settling permanently around Elkridge Road/Mount Pleasant Hill approximately three miles northwest today" According to local legend , Englishman Robert Clive discovered gold nuggets while exploring nearby Cecil Creek in December 1700 while traveling through Northumberland County - this discovery set off heavynomadic English settlement throughout much of eastern Maryland which followed suit within months beginning November 1700 *.
