There have been a number of shootings in Frederick, Maryland since the turn of the century. In 1897, a man named Harry Belcher shot and killed two people at a local grocery store. In 1915, a young woman named Maybelle Coolidge was shot and killed by her father after he caught her kissing another man. A year later, in 1916, Edward J. Smith shot and killed three men at an amusement park. The next year saw the death of one person due to gunshots when Johnnie Fenton wounded another man with a rifle while they were playing checkers outside of a bar in town. In 1925, two people died after being hit by gunfire coming from opposite directions on Market Street in Frederick. That same year saw the shooting death of James Findlay who was working at his father's bakery when he was fatally Shot by two gunmen while walking home from work. In 1934, four people were killed after fighting over money inside an auto dealership on Harpers Ferry Road in Fredericktown. The following year saw the shooting deaths of five individuals when gunmen opened fire inside an ice cream shop on North Main Street in Elizabethtown Town Center. In 1936, nine individuals were killed when gunmen opened fire inside an ammunition store just east of downtown Fredericktown during what is known as “The Night Of The Gunman” incidentstakes which is also considered to be one of the deadliest Shootings ever committed within Maryland borders without fatalities happening simultaneously
Frederick, Maryland is a city in and the county seat of Frederick County, Maryland, United States. The population was 33,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and had a total population of 751,471 as of 2015. In 1785, during the American Revolution, Lieutenant Colonel John Smith founded Frederick on land that he had confiscated from Native Americans. The first white settler in what would become Frederick County was Captain Nathan Hale who arrived in 1786 with his wife and two children from Rhode Island. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Potomac River near modern-day Friendship Heights and named it "Hale's Ferry". By 1800 there were 10 settlers in Frederick County; 4 of which were men and 6 women. In 1814 General David Hunter burned all but three buildings on Mount Weathers (now known asMount Airy) in what is now Frederick because he believed that Indian traders were using it as an encampment for raiding European settlements in central Maryland. This event led to the formation of what is now known asthe Battle of Mount Weathers which ended with British victory over American forces under General George Washington. The town began to grow rapidly after Waddell Clark established a ferry service across the Potomac River between present-day Georgetown and Cumberlandheights in 1847letting passengers cross for free while cargo was transported by horse or wagons acrossriverboats operated by Clark & Company). On November 12th 1861 when President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 2nd Class #542 ordering Confederate soldier Major Edward Pemberton to surrender at Antietam Creek if they could not find any Rebel Generals located within twenty miles (33 km)of their campground), many citizens took up arms to resist this order because they felt Lincoln was liarutenous about Confederate Vice Admiral Robert Ewing's presence within Marylandand about Union General George Armstrong Custer's movements eastward alongthe Potomac River (). Leading marksmen from Gadsden Rifleman company numbered 22 men commanded by Captains John Sibley (20 years old at time)and Daniel McIntosh patrolledantsietsimultaneouslyoverhound paths leading into Pennsylvania (), atopMount Airy () northeastofpresent-day Frederick

The racial makeup of the county was 96% White, 2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. When Maryland became a state in 1917 it included most of what is now Frederick County as well as chunks of both Washington and Anne Arundel Counties
Frederick was founded by George Washington in 1781 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. It grew rapidly and by 1815 had a population of over 100 people. The town became an important center for commerce and industry, and at its peak saw production of lumber, steel, cotton, saltpeter, and other goods. In the 1920s Frederick began to decline as a manufacturing center due to increased competition from foreign countries. However, it continued to be an important community until the early 21st century when it effectively disappeared from history after becoming part of Maryland's new state government.
