Frederick, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Ft. Meade Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern edge of Frederick County and borders Montgomery County to the north and east; Harford County to the south and west; and Anne Arundel County to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Frederick were French traders in 1614 who named it "Monsieurville" after their captain Francois de Montresor. In 1755, Captain John Smith discovered what he believed was a new landmass called North America when he landed near present-day Frederick Town on Mayflower II. He named this area "America" because he thought it might be where India was supposed to be located. William Stone built a fort here in 1757 as part of his plan for security for the colony during its early years. In 1871, Frederick became an incorporated municipality with a population of 5,600 people under its own governance rather than being subject to Prince George's County government which continued to operate until 1925. As an unincorporated community until 1955, Frederick experienced limited development but had strong ties with surrounding communities such as Silver Spring and Takoma Park which are still very close by today. In 1965, when Prince George's County merged into Baltimore City government, much of what remained within Frederick Township (including much of downtown) became part of Baltimore City proper while most residential areas within company limits remain within Frederick Township today though some have moved out into Baltimore City suburbs such as Towson or White Marsh since then including many businesses that have made their home there including Amazon Web Services Inc., Verizon Wireless' Bell Labs campus (now known as National Institutes Health), Google LLC's Dupont Circle Research Campus office park (), Wells Fargo & Company's headquarters () and over 20 other notable companies that have been based there like Pfizer Inc., Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals Inc., Monsanto Co., Coca ColaCola Company (), The Home Depot Corporation (), FedEx Corporation (), Sears Roebuck & Co (). Many residents continue to live within company boundaries today despite these developments however public access routes are now open up through neighborhoods such as Mount Vernon Square () which had been largely closed off until recently due to concerns about surface water quality issues caused by nearby industrial sites although those concerns have since dissipated Frederick has seen increased development in recent years with new businesses moving in along with more public infrastructure projects like a $248 million light rail project that will connect downtown with various neighborhoods around town as well as a large bioscience research complex that opened up next door in 2013 called academic Village

In 1968, Fredericksburg reverted back to its original name - Frederick - after becoming part of Prince George's County within Maryland pending further changes thereto effected by statute under then Governor William Donald Schaefer (D). Despite some efforts by local officials to promote tourism within the city limits during recent years,[1]Fredericksburg has generally declined since 2000[2], ranking last among all U S cities in terms both real estate values[3]and job market share[4].
