The first settlers arrived in what is now Frederick in 1810 when Captain John Smith sailed ashore onorganized Landing at Point Lookout during his exploration of western Maryland. Captain Smith named this landing Point Frederick after King Frederick I of Denmark who had given him asylum following his flight from Russia during the Napoleonic Wars (1812-1814). After Captain Smith's visit, other early settlers included Joshua Barnes who built a cabin on what is now North Main Street within what is today downtown Frederick; James Brown who founded an independent church on present day Market Square; John Atherton who settled along present day Broadway; Elias Goodrich who platted what are now east side streets within present day central business district; William Hagerty who built a log cabin near where Swenzer Well Road meets Interstate 95; Samuel Huntman who set up shop near where Mount Vernon Avenue met Broad Ripple Avenue; Edward Mifflin whose mill operated until 1827; Jacob Perkins Jr., Sr.; Ebenezer Postigo and six others among whom are unnamed made their homes aroundpresent day Noland Park across from modern day American Legion Post #2 just north of present day center square on Spring Garden Road

The history of Frederick begins with its founding by Prince Frederick in 1785 as part of Lord Baltimore's Province of Maryland pursuant to a Royal Charter granted by George II. The name "Frederick" derives from his ancestor Friedrich Wilhelm von Waldstein who had arrived in North America about 1740s from Germany settling near what is now Wilmington Delaware where he became a landowner and trader before moving upriver to this area around 1684/5 when he purchased land at present day Harford County from Sir John Smith for £1000 sterling (£10k today). Prince Frederick's grandson James (1775-1837) donated much acreage including that now located within present day Frederick County to be used for agricultural purposes; an early example being a large parcel donated by James Aiken which still ranks among the largest landed estates ever sold in Maryland - measuring 620 acres (2 square miles) at its peak size! At that time there were only 2 farmers living permanently within modern day Frederick Counties – Alfred Brooke & Cornelius Buttrick – operating small plots totaling only 8 acres (3 hectares)! Farming practices then were very primitive; dryland farming using hogs raised on pastures supplemented by corn fed haylots during off-season; production levels were low due largely to lack of resources which limited incomes even further! By 1860 there must have been some 6000 farmers living scattered throughout all 10 southern Montgomery Coasts (!), 3 eastern Caroline Coasts (& York co.)…plus several thousand scattered throughout western Hunan Coaster & Calvert coasters!!! In short: quite literally every farm & house imaginable existed back then!!! sadly these days things have changed radically: nearly all farmland has been bought or leased by absentee landlords/developers…..and accordingly we find typical MD “Urban Walks” ending abruptly inside rural areas……….so much for improving lifestyles!!
