On September 2nd 1914 during World War I General John Jernigan’s Sixth Ulysses S Grant army invaded Fredericksburg Heights after crossing the Rappahannock River at Antietam Bridge without opposition from Confederate General Robert E Lee’s army which held strong positions nearby (the Battle of Fredericksburg). Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his unit to withdraw immediately due to heavy casualties but fought another battle later that same day at Five Forks over 100 miles away while under heavy fire from Confederate Generals Joseph Hooker and Terry Lee(the Battle of Chancellorsville). This action effectively ended warfare on both sides in Northern Virginia within months making it one of largest battlefield losses for both armies ever encountered (units lost approximately ratio 5:1 against Confederate total). There have been many significant events associated with Frederick over time such as becoming an incorporated city on November 1st 1947 and hosting numerous international conferences like NATO or G20 summits here including COP21 Paris Climate Summit just last year .
