Gun hammers were being used by the early colonists in Frederick, Md., as early as 1634. By 1753, gun hammers had become a common tool in the colony. The first hammer to be expressly designed for use with firearms was made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and patented on Feb. 5, 1753. This hammer was a simple affair consisting of an iron or brass handle with a leather grip. It was used to apply pressure to the muzzle of the firearm to improve its accuracy. By 1810, handguns had become almost exclusively rifles and pistols in Maryland. A number of different types of guns were available at that time including flintlock pistols and cannon due to their popularity among military commanders and militia members during this time period. As new technologies such as percussion caps and metallic cartridges became more prevalent,HAMMER HAMMERS began becoming less common among infantrymen and more commonly employed by artillery officers and cavalry soldiers. In 1876,hammer hammers finally went out of favor due to the increased availability of percussion cap firearms which caused them to lose their rapid fire ability compared to other firearms.
