Frederick is named after King Frederick the Great of Germany and his wife Queen Augusta of Saxe-Gotha who both lived in nearby Vienna before moving to Frederick in 1805. The first settler in what would become Frederick was Nicholas Safford who arrived on July 2, 1784 with 140 crates of wheat from England. A few years later James Hartsgrove built a log cabin on the east side of present day Indian Hill Road which he named "Hardsgrove's House". By 1800 there were twenty three settlers living in this area including four families from Ireland and one family from Holland. In 1802, John Fenton purchased two tracts of land that included present day Indian Hill Road and built a cabin called "Fenton's Cabin" which still stands today along with other pioneer buildings such as a schoolhouse (1807), post office (1811), store (1814), mill (1816), and hospital (1820). In 1828 Isaac Nitsche moved to Frederick from Walthamstow, England with his family consisting of six children: two girls and four boys aged 8-13; they were all given away to relatives when their father died in 1827 while serving out his sentence for burglary at Allegany County Jail near Annapolis Junction. It wasn't until 1861 that Fredrick became an incorporated town when it was granted by Act No. 191 under Govt'n Of Md., 4th Deed March 1861 by Judge Ephraim Meeks & James Pecksbury Sr.. On October 1st 1865 it had a population of 724 people according to US Top 10 maps then showed increase to 1093 by 1870 .
