Frederick, Maryland is a city in Prince Georges County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. The city is named for George Washington and it became a state in 1776. Frederick had a population of 12,644 in 2000 and 11,868 in 2010. In 1870 the population was 534; by 1990 it had increased to 1,568. Today Frederick is an important economic center within the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and home to many high-tech companies as well as restaurants and nightlife districts such as Northgate Park and West End Market. The first European settlers in what is now Frederick were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1665 on Dirksen Island near present-day Mount Vernon (Hagerstown). They built a seasonal farmstead known as Piscataway on what is now River Road between 1701 and 1707. By 1800 about eighty percent of the original German settlers living here were gone with most having moved westward into Cecil County or Virginia Territory during this time period because land there was more affordable than back east where tobacco farming was the mainstay economy. In 18th century America there were few cities large enough to warrant their own name but several small settlements grew up around them including Annapolis (now called Middleburg), Bowie (later Westminster) and Harford Heights which later merged to form Frederick after its incorporation into Prince Georges County on April 14, 1818 After becoming part of Maryland following its admission into Confederation on July 15, 1847 it experienced rapid growth due largely to military spending by Marylanders during World War II – although industry declined thereafter until the early 21st century when post-industrial values revived downtown Frederick with new development including residential towers along Constitution Avenue Downtown business district has seen significant redevelopment over recent decades with riverfront retail areas expanding northward beyond downtown while government buildings have been demolished or relocated elsewhere creating Lafayette Square near Light Street/U Street while nearby Stroudsburg has experienced new housing developments that include two university campuses

The town boundaries were changed to encompass the modern-day counties of Anne Arundel and Prince George's in 1876. The population was 7,691 at the 2010 census. The town began as a small fishing village on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1810. In 1836, Frederick became the seat of Prince George's County after its creation from part of Baltimore County. By 1870, the population had grown to over 12,000 people and by 1910 it had reached 21,000 people. The most important industry in Frederick during this time period was agriculture with many farmers growing crops such as tobacco and corn. However, other industries that have been significant in Frederick include engineering (including one firm that manufactured locomotives) and machine production (which included two firms that built automobiles). In 1936, Frederick became an all-electronic city following passage of legislation providing for electronic voting throughout the United States. As an all-electronic city,Frederick is also one of only a few U.S towns to have joined Open Data Baltimore which provides access to government data across all agencies including schools and libraries
Frederick, Maryland was founded in 1783 by George Washington and named for the Prince of Wales, Frederick III. The town served as the capital of Maryland from 1783 until 1801. In 1802, it became the capital of United States.
