Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elkton is located on the eastern edge of Prince George's County and is bordered to the east by Frederick County and to the west by Anne Arundel County. The area that now became Elkton was first settled in 1775 by men from Cecil Township, Pennsylvania. The community most likely derived its name from a large elk which had been killed near present-day Elkton Road and Station Road during an early hunting season. In 1813, a post office was established at Elkton for residents of Cecil Township who were scattered throughout Princess Anne County. That year, John Haltom moved his family from Harrisonburg to what is now Elkton and started a small farm which he named "Haltom's Corner." By 1827, all of Prince George's County had been organized into districts and there were no posts left within Cecil Township except those served by Haltom’s Corner Post Office. In 1837, John Capps purchased property in what are now Elmira and Highlandtown areas of central Prince George's County and began to build what would become known as Capps' Woodruff Mill which still stands today. By 1840, most of western Prince George's County had also been organized into districts with one post office remaining within Cecil Township - Haltom’s Corner Post Office - serving primarily settlers on the southern border of present day Forest Park Avenue (now Morningside Drive). By 1860, however, many farms in western Prince George's County had become unoccupied due to advancing settlement towards Baltimore City; few people remained in Cecil Township for more than twenty years after it was formed exclusively for residents of that region outside of centralPrinceGeorgeCounty. Consequently, when Cecil Township was reorganized as a borough in 1872 following reorganization within PrinceGeorgeCounty following Census data showing an increase in population over previous decades (>5000 residences), only about 40% of its original residents remained within its boundaries - including just 10% who lived inside current Elmira/Highlandtown areas where Capps' Woodruff Mill once stood Elkhart Plantation opened up new land east side creek across road from old mill site around 1870

Elkton is a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Frederick, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elkton was founded by European Americans in 1784 as a small community on the north side of Elkton Creek. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources; it became an important center for agriculture and trade in the 19th century. In 1885, Elkton became a city and developed into one of the most prosperous communities in Maryland. In the late 20th century, Elmton experienced significant growth as a suburb of Washington D.C., but has since contracted economically because of competition from D.C.'s high-rise development and increasing transportation costs. The history of Elkton is intertwined with that of its namesake creek, which provides drinking water for much of the town and helps support agricultural production. The creek was first named after Captain John Smith's Musketeer company who were quartered there during the American Revolution on their way from Canada to support General George Washington's army. Because many early settlers came from England via Delaware River crossings (the Susquehanna River had not yet been opened to traffic), they also called their new settlement "Delaware." By 1800, when government surveys began compiling data on towns in Montgomery County, Delaware had become one of several localities within that county known as "Elkton." The first residents of what would later be called Elkton were white male farmers who arrived around 1784 from Pennsylvania and New York City – likely via boat or ferry ride across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge System then under construction near Annapolis Junction on UMD's campus site today (and now part of Johns Hopkins University). Their homes were located along present-day Elkton Creek Road just east of where it crosses Route 202/Upper Columbia Pike today; this area would become known as "Old Town," while adjacent portions along present-day Deerfield Road (northwest corner) became "New Town". Located at what is now inner turnaround point on Elkton Creek west bank upstream from modern day downtown Elmtown - midway between Old Town & High Point - these early pioneers developed extensive acreage including apple orchards, cornfields and other field crops; milling flour; manufacturing pottery; spinning cotton yarn & thread etc.; leather goods etc..
