Elkton is a small town in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the eastern edge of the county and is bordered by Catonsville to the north, Bethesda to the east, Upper Marlboro to the south, and White Marsh to the west. The town started as a post office on April 15, 1814. It was named for John Elkinton who donated land in what is now Elkton. The first store opened in 1836 and it was called "The Store of John Elkinton." In 1839, a school was built and it was called "John Crouch's School." In 1840-41, a sawmill operated in town and when it stopped working because of financial difficulties, the town built its own mill which still operates today. In 1850-51 another school was built but it closed due to low enrollment. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1861 but quickly rebuilt with help from local farmers. A railroad depot arrived in Elmton in 1865 and became an important factor for growth during that time period. In 1870-71 Elmton had just over 100 citizens when it annexed neighboring Acworth Township; this made it one of only two towns within Queen Anne's County that did not undergo annexation proceedings until after 1890 (the other being Aberdeen). That same year saw completion of what would be known as “the great Elkhorn road” or National Road number 1 through central Maryland linking Baltimore with Washington D.C., Philadelphia through Delaware Valley via Mechanicsburg & Carlisle (now part of Reading), Cumberland Gap between West Virginia & Pennsylvania (& eventually Pittsburgh), & finally Yorktown Heights across Potomac River from Washington D.C.. During World War II there were several small businesses set up here including four factories that produced rubber products such as tires and plastics; they all closed before hostilities ceased in 1945 however one unit survived into Postwar years selling soybeans door-to-door like any other business would do back then thank goodness! After war ended these businesses went out of business too so much for them to make up for lost production but some remain standing today as restaurants/cafes/bars etc... As mentioned earlier there has been some growth taking place recently with new housing developments popping up along Hwy 301A close by followed by new retail stores (espcially around Blvd 301) giving people more options open unto them while still remaining close enough to their old home base if they ever wanted or needed groceries etc... Most notable lately has been development taking place along 301A itself with many homes being built right next to each other_____________________________________________________________________ There are many things that make up Elmton - its community spiritates everything from hosting reunions every summer at nearby Birchmount Park all the way down to getting together for bake sales/barn dances during fall/winter months etc... even having its own annual parade which takes place on Main Street just before Thanksgiving! There are also several golf courses within walking distance including one set up specifically forElskton residents - The Gables Golf Course! Elkton, Maryland is a small town in Prince George’s County, Maryland on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1792 by Welsh immigrants and named for Colonel John Elkinton, an early landowner and captain in the British Army. The first settlers were Protestants who arrived from Kentucky and Pennsylvania. They built log cabins which they called "the Elktons" because of their proximity to elms (a type of oak). Early residents engaged in farming, fishing, and hunting. In 1807, a group of Scotsmen from Elgin County, Illinois moved to Elkton and began to farm rice fields that they later developed into what is now known as downtown Elkton. In 1837, President James K. Polk established a military post at Fort Myer nearpresent-day Elkton for the purpose of guarding against Confederate attack during the American Civil War. Many people from eastern Maryland relocated to Fort Myer for work during the war; among them was Samuel Chapman who situated his family here permanently when he bought 160 acres (65 hectares) of land around present-day Elmwood Avenue in 1861. Elmwood Avenue became known as "Chapman's Road." After America's victory over slavery in 1865, many African Americans came to live in Elkton through Reconstruction Era programs implemented by President Andrew Johnson. Black families lived together until after World War II when integration took place throughout Prince George’s County through court rulings and legislation passed by Congress following Brown v Board of Education . A large black business community developed around Walmart Supercenter starting out as two small stores next door to each other on Forest Drive before expanding into three stores across First Street NW between Queen Anne Avenue and Rockville Pike before moving into their current headquarters just east of I-495 on North Capitol street near Washington National Cathedral .
