The Elkton gun case history began in 1825 when the first settlers arrived in what is now Elkton, Maryland. The town was founded on a farm that belonged to Elias Fortescue and his family. The fort was built on the present day site of Elkton High School. The fort served as a military base during the War of 1812 and also played an important role in the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1827, John Nicholson bought land in what is now Elkton and developed it into a town. He named the town after his daughter,Elkton Jane Nicholson. The first settler to live in Elkhon ton was James Steele who built a cabin on land he purchased from Nicholas Keyes in 1830. The first school in Elkhon ton was established by teacher Mrs. Higginson in 1835. It was known as the First schoolhouse until 1838 when it became known as the Methodist Missionary Church which still stands today. In 1840, Adam Griggs moved to Elmira and started trading goods with Indians at an outpost called Fort Griggs which is located east ofpresent day Elkton High School on Old Route 33A). This led to heavy trade between Fort Griggs and Elmira which helped support development withinElkonton over time

The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census.Located on Elkton's east side near the confluence of the Susquehanna and Patapsco Rivers, it was first settled in 1784 by Germans from Germany. After suffering through two decades of civil war and famine, Elkton began to grow slowly during the late 19th century as settlers came to find a fertile tract of land for farming and ranching. By 1920, however, growth had surpassed that of any other community in Montgomery County. The growth of Elkton has been largely due to its location - just off U.S. Route 9 between Bethesda and Silver Spring - as well as its accessibility to education and shopping opportunities. Today, Elkton remains an economically vibrant community with a wide variety of businesses including churches (most notably Episcopal), schools (including several private academies), health care facilities such as a hospital and outpatient clinics, as well as numerous homes for senior citizens. Today’s residents are proud descendants of German immigrants who arrived in Elkton in the early 1800s; many continue to identify themselves with their German heritage even though they now live within one-half mile (1 km) of American soil. In spite of recent efforts by some residents to emphasize their Irish or Italian origins instead thereof, most people hereabouts still speak English fluently and maintain strong ties with family and friends back home.

It is part of the Hyattsville–National Institute of Standards and Technology (HNIST) metropolitan area. Elkton was established in 1814 as a stop on the first wagon train to reach Baltimore from Pennsylvania. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its natural resources, such as coal and lumber, and its location near Washington andBaltimore counties. In 1916, Elkton became one of two towns in Maryland to be incorporated as an independent city; the other being nearby Takoma Park. During World War II, Elkton played an important role in the development of American munitions manufacturing by producing aircraft parts for Boeing and Lockheed Martin. After the war, Elmwood Shopping Center opened in downtown Elkton which led to increased business for local businesses. In 1984, Elmwood Mall closed after years of decline including several unsuccessful attempts at reopening it; however, it reopened as part of a new mixed-use development called Gateway Crossing that includes office space and retail units. In recent years, Elkton has experienced modest growth with limited economic development opportunities due to its remote location and lack of transportation options outside Hyattsville or Prince George's County. However, there are plans underway by developers to reopen some street-level businesses within walking distance of downtown while also creating new jobs through development projects such as a hotel or Target store inside what used to be a defunct gas station. Despite these challenges, Elkton remains an important community with strong ties to its surrounding rural areas where residents continue to produce many products essential for their regions economy including apples and soybeans grown on large farms located miles away from town; logging operations that produce hardwood trees near Walden Pond National Wildlife Refuge; fishing derby held annually at Catoctin Creek State Park;and farmers markets each year throughout early summer
The Elkton area was first settled by the Potomac River Indians in around 1774. In 1814, the United States acquired it from the British Empire and renamed it Elkton Township. The area became a county in 1914 and was named for John Elkton, a Revolutionary War soldier who fought at Yorktown.
