Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Elkton was founded in 1814 by Scots-Irish immigrants and their families who had settled on the Patuxent River. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the convergence of several major wagon roads. In 1892, Elkton became a city and has remained that way ever since. The first inhabitants of what is now Elkton were Irish immigrants who arrived in search of land and opportunity in what was then part of Pennsylvania. By 1800, these settlers had erected rough log cabins along the banks of the Patuxent River; these villages gradually evolved into what we know today as Elkton. In 1814, following British independence from Great Britain, General James Hargrave ordered all white settlers south of Fredericktown to leave within five days or be fired upon by his troops. The order was vigorously enforced and many Scots-Irish people were forced to flee their homes for fear they would be arrested and deported back to Scotland. Many did not return home until after America gained her independence from Great Britain in 1776. Because so many Scots-Irish people had left their homeland prior to American independence, there was no organized Scottish-American community existing in Maryland prior to 1776 when American Independence occurred. Consequently, few records survive documenting early Scottish-American life in Maryland; however oral tradition does contain some stories about this period which are still recalled today by many residents of Elkton and neighboring communities around Prince George's County (Pocahontas Valley). Some sources mention that two bagpipes players from Glasgow traveled downriver and performed for various Native American groups before landing at Point Comfort on April 5th, 1775 with news about British military movements upriver near Cumberland Castle; this event is also sometimes referred to as "The March on Mount Vernon." Some historians believe that one or more additional Glasgow bagpipes players landed at Point Comfort that day as well - although no evidence exists supporting this claim. It may have been one or more members of the McClellan family who played bagpipes for Indians during this time period.; however it is most likely that only one player from Glasgow actually visited Point Comfort during this era., This visit may have been related to local celebrations honoring General Hargrave's victory over Lord Cornwallis' forces at Yorktown four years earlier on October 14th,. After landing at Point Comfort approximately 40 miles below Washington City proper - where he contested with Cornwallis' army –Hargrave dispersed his forces northward across Patuxent River rather than continue battle against an overwhelming opponent near Georgetown castle (). Although little known today outside Prince George's County(), events surrounding General Hargrive's visitPoint Comfortable remain significant milestones illustrating Highland Scottish immigration into North America between 1775 & 1840
Elkton was first settled in 1772 by Captain John Smith. The town was named for the Elk River which ran through it. The town was originally a small farming community with only two stores and one post office. In 1854, the Maryland General Assembly established Elkton as a town and gave it its charter. The first mayor of Elkton was Wm. Fenton. The town had six churches, three schools, and sixty-six businesses when it became a city in 1916.
