Elkton was founded in 1784 by John Elkton and his wife, Sarah. The town was originally called "Eckington" after the family's farmstead. In 1839, Elkton became a part of Baltimore County. In 1875, the county disbanded and Elkton became an independent city. The city was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1914.
