In 1873 it became part of PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY when it was organized from parts of MONTGOMERY and CALVERT Counties. The name "Elkton" comes from one of two settlements along Route 1 near present day Elkton Village - one called Elm Grove (founded about 1800) which was home to several families who farmed tobacco until 1850; we believe that because this locality lay within what are now Montgomery and Prince George's Counties - both named after English gentlemen generals who served their countries during or shortly after America's independence - they were given this name too." Grant on October 3rd 1865; 4) On November 5th 1896 President Grover Cleveland signed legislation creating Montgomery County which included parts of eastern Prince George's County; and 5) On December 6th 1898 service members from Fort Meade (now Bowie National Military Park) served Christmas dinner at local homes in Elkton as part of celebrations marking World War II Armistice Day. The townsfolk continued their hard work during World War II when they produced more than one million pounds (454 metric tons)of war munitions including torpedoes and bombs. After the war ended and new taxes were put into effect, many people left Elmton for jobs in larger cities such as Baltimore or Washington D.C., but some young families stayed to continue their traditions like raising animals or playing softball on Elmtown Common . In recent years there has been an effort by some members of the community to revive aspects such as horseback riding and corn mowing/gathering on Elmtown Common .
