Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheaton-Warren-Md. Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elkton is located on the eastern border of Prince George's County and forms the northwestern edge of Washington County. The first people to live in what is now Elkton were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day Elkton Lake. Some early settlers were Englishmen who arrived during the Stamp Act period in 1765. They built a small cabin on the banks of Elk Creek, about 4 miles east of present day Elkton Mills Dam. A post office was established there in 1814, and by 1827 it had become known as "Elkton". In 1847, John Hargrave founded what became Easton & Hargrave Paper Co., one of America's earliest paper companies. His familyowned business operated until 1924 when it merged with Bethlehem Steel Corp.. In that year, Easton & Hargrave Paper metamorphosed into "The Maryland Gazette" which remains a daily newspaper today In 1861, three men named William Sweeny started an oil refinery at present day Elkton Mills Dam; this would be one of the first refineries in America and would remain operational until 1972. William Sweeny also developed what became known as "The White Sulphur Springs", which produced sulfuric acid for fertilizers and other purposes until 1974; these days they are still used for production purposes Later that year (1861), Elmira native Augustus Busch began developing land around present day Potomac Lake which would become known as "elktown". He laid out a grid pattern for his new community which included square blocks with two stories each - this layout was later adopted by other developers throughout Prince George's County He named his development "Elktown" after King George II of England who donated £1,000 to help finance its construction soon after its founding .Busch continued to develop elktown until his death in 1865 . His son Augustus Busch Jr., continued to operate the community until he moved away in 1936 The name has been anglicized many times including Elfstown since 1946 when it changed hands several times before becoming The Elmira Enterprise Times Journal Company Incorporated on March 2nd 2006

Elkton, Maryland is located in the state of Maryland and is bordered by Washington to the east, Calvert County to the north, and Prince George's County to the west. The population of Elkton was estimated at around 12,000 in 2000 according to the American Community Survey. The town was named after Elkanah Hill (1753-1828) who traded land with colonists for goods and services. He also founded a Methodist church in 1806. In 1824, John Marshall donated 2,500 acres of land for a town site. The first settlement in what is now Elkton was built on this site in 1830 by men from Pennsylvania. In 1838, Isaac Treadwell bought 640 acres from James Armstrong for $2 per acre. Over time more settlers came to Elkton until it had a population of about 20 people by 1860. In 1865, Hiram Lewis donated 1 acre of land for an Episcopal church which was dedicated on December 3rd that year. It would be another 60 years before the current Catholic Church building would be erected on the same site as present day Elmira High School; however, construction began in 1898 under then-Mayor John Fenton and continues today as part of Cathedral Basilica Of Our Lady Of Peace Parish’s outreach efforts into rural areas across central Maryland through programs like Habitat For Humanity and Caritas USA/Minimum Wage Project. In 1907, Elkton merged with neighboring community Marsden which at that time had about 4200 residents according to census data taken just two years earlier! After merging there were several changes made including changing street names but most importantly electing their first mayor - Ambrose Gillett - who served from 1907 until 1912 when he became governor of Maryland! A new courthouse replaced an older one that burned down in 1906 during an event called “The Great Fire” which damaged many homes & businesses within miles radius including Elkton itself! The fire also destroyed 300 acres near present day Bowie Street & Wicomico Creek making it difficult for normal business operations &Residents were forced to use temporary quarters until replacement housing could be constructed or they took up farming or trading activities elsewhere! A fundraising campaign led by Mrs.(then) Mayor Fenton raised over $50000 which enabled construction of a new courthouse beginning operations on September 1st 1909!!! This brick structure still stands today as one of Elkton’s most impressive landmarks! Municipal government changed hands again in 1916 when Elijah Epps succeeded Mr.(then) Mayor Gillett & remained in office until his death just shy of 100 years ago this past year!!! During his tenure Council decided not to annex any other communities within our borders despite requests from some !!!!! Well prior thereto there had been talk among Elkhontonians about annexation should certain border adjustments become available thru discussions held between Governors Beall & Whitman during their terms (& finally upon Epps' death). Unfortunately due largely to World War I economic conditions those discussions never materialized but eventually annexed neighboring communities such as Rockville Centre effective February 1915 !! We are proud history makers here folks !!

In 1814, when the Maryland state line was moved eastward, Elkton became part of Prince George's County. In 1851, Elkton incorporated as a city. During the 1930s and 1940s, the city experienced significant economic growth due to its role as a major production center for aluminum products. After World War II, however, the city's fortunes declined because of declining manufacturing jobs and increasing competition from nearby Baltimore. In the late 1990s, however, Elkton began to experience significant revitalization through development of new businesses and arts programs.
