Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,024 at the 2010 census. Its ZIP Code is 21017. Elkton is located on the eastern border of Prince George's County and shares borders with Hyattsville to the south, Takoma Park to the east, Bowie to the north, and Bel Air to the west. The area around present-day Elkton was first settled by German farmers in 1795. The community name likely derived from an oak tree near the current site of town, which was known as "Elkerton" until 1836 when it changed its name to "Eldridge". A post office called Eldridge was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1961. In 1814 Elijah Hogg (1772-1846) came to what is now Elkton from nearby Charles Town and founded a farm that later became Hogg's Mills. He also erected a sawmill on his property; this mill still stands today and produces lumber for buildings in nearby Bowie. In 1830 Eliphalet Nott (1798-1867), another early settler, bought land adjacent to Hogg's Mill from Hogg's widow; he organized a Baptist church there in 1831 and named it after himself. In 1837 John Smith (1799-1875) arrived from Williamsburgshirehire Scotland via Baltimore with his family and began homesteading along what is now Elmendorf Road just east ofpresent day Elkton High School football field - this area now forms part of Johns Creek Elementary School." It wasn't until 1840 that General David Dixon moved into present day Elkton following his purchase of land southwest of Fredericktown near Bowie River where he built Fort Dixon; during this time many settlers began arriving from southern Maryland looking for virgin lands that had been sold at auction off by President James K. Polk as part of his Land Policy Reform Act of February 2nd, 1850." Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. Elkton is located on Elkton River and its namesake creek. The area that now makes up Elkton was first settled by English Quakers in 1634. In 1792, Major General James K. Polk moved his cavalry unit from Georgetown to what is today Elkton after it was destroyed by a fire; he chose this site because of its natural resources which included wooded hills and water rights on the river. After the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, many British settlers arrived in Prince George's County and founded Friendship (later Friendship Heights), Upper Marlboro and other towns around present-day Elkton. In 1827, Washingtonians led by Captain David Dixon decided to create a new post at Elkton for their military forces during the Mexican–American War; they called it "Washington Barracks". In 1892, two brothers named John Wray built a gristmill on what is now Water Street just south ofpresent-day Elmwood Avenue; they became known as the town's first milliners (the name probably derives from "elk" + "town"). For many years there were no schools in or around Elkton; residentschooled themselves until after World War II when public education began to spread throughout Prince George's County. In 1916, two men who had been working together at an oil well near present-day College Park formed an oil company with eleven other men and renamed it Occidental Petroleum Corporation; they began production at Elkton refinery soon afterwards. In 1944 local resident Clarence Mazzilli started advertising soft drinks for sale from his home - one of the earliest soft drink stands in Maryland - selling Coca Cola products until 1938 when PepsiCo took over operations following Moose Jaw Hatchery Co.'s divestiture that year. Elkton, Maryland was first settled in 1749 and became a town in 1824. The town was named after Captain John Elkinton who led an American militia during the American Revolution. The town population reached 5,000 by 1830 and 10,000 by 1840. In 1871, Elkton merged with nearby Mechanicsville to form the current city of Elkton.
