Elkton, Maryland is a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland. The population was 5,574 at the 2010 census. Elkton is one of the original settlements in what is now Montgomery County. The first permanent settler in Elkton was Francis Scott Key who arrived on the same ship as George Washington on May 14, 1814. key's Log Cabin still stands today and is a museum open to the public. The first school in Elkton was built by Rev. John Witherspoon and taught children from 1st to 4th grade. A new school building was completed in 1868 and served grades K-12 until 1965 when it was replaced by the current building which seats 200 students inside and 30 outside. When George Washington died on April 19, 1799 his body was brought back to Mount Vernon where he had been buried before being moved to Arlington Cemetery where he remained until his death on July 29, 1800. On July 3rd of that year Congress passed an act placing all Ulysses S Grant's remains near those of Washington because "the memory of General Ulysses S Grant will Long be revered" according to author Draymond Greenfield who researched this topic for his book "George Washington: Life and Times". President James Klinker signed an order dated December 20th, 1907 designating Elmendorf Air Force Base as home station for United States Naval Forces Europe (USNFE). This base became known as USS Lexington after that aircraft carrier which sank during World War II while operating off Norway’s coast killing over 200 sailors including Admiral Nimitz himself! In 1933 Mayor Harry Jaffe inaugurated Elkton's first civic center and playground complex with a $2 million donation from Mrs.[?] Ewing GorgaStanton which included a swimming pool, gymnasium/gymnasium annexe with weight room/batting cages/cardiovascular equipment etc., two football fields (later renamed), three tennis courts (later renamed), two basketball courts (later renamed), a movie theater (now called The Screen) and other such amenities for residents of townspeople only although access roads were also provided for cars coming into town from neighboring communities like Cross Keys or Unincorporated Creek Valley towns like Upper Carrolltown or Westminster . Elkton is a small town in western Maryland, located about 15 miles east of Washington D.C. The population was 713 at the 2000 census and 827 at the 2010 census. Elkton is home to two industries that have an important presence in the local economy: aluminum production and papermaking. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Elkton were Methodist missionaries who named their community after a nearby large tree, which they believed would provide shade for their new colony. By 1814, there were only five residents living in the town when it was renamed "Elkton" after General John Forbes, who commanded Fort Frederick on the Potomac River during the War of 1812. In 1819, Colonel Isaac Neely purchased land north of present-day Elkton from George Catlett for $1,000 and began developing it into a farmstead known as Neely's Corners. The development included a millrace that still operates today and several homes which remain standing today including one called "the White House". During World War II, Elkton was one of four towns effected by aerial bombing raids conducted by Strategic Air Command (SAC) in support of Operation Neptune's Spear; many buildings were destroyed or damaged but no citizens were killed or injured. After the war ended, many people chose to stay in Elkton while various businesses closed down or merged into larger companies. One such company that folded up shop was Alcoa Aluminum Corporation which manufactured aluminum products until its closure in 1984. After Alcoa's closure some residents left town and started anew in neighboring Arcola Township where they continue to live today. Others decided to move closer to D.C., taking advantage of Elkin's proximity to Interstate 95 as well as state highway 355 which runs through town center making it easy access to all things related thereto without having to leave their homes). Today, much like then, Elkton is an agricultural community with a heavy reliance on aluminum production and papermaking – both industries are continuing strong even as other businesses close down around them due primarily to technological advancements and changes within those industries alone (eBay has recently announced plans for opening up another manufacturing plant near Laurel). However despite these challenges – such as increased competition from foreign manufacturers – many people continue residing here unchanged since 1800s when this area became known for its agriculture rather than its manufactures/industries
