Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hyattsville-MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elkton is located about 8 miles (13 km) north of Washington D.C., and about 17 miles (27 km) east of Baltimore. Its name comes from the olden days when it was a small village on the eastern edge of what is now Elkton Heights. The first people to settle here were Dutch settlers in 1624 and 1625. In 1856, John Hargrave founded Hargrave & Sons Custom Gun Works here in what would become Elkton. This company manufactured firearms for both law enforcement and civilians up until World War II when production stopped due to wartime shortages of materials. In 1967, Hargrave Guns moved its operations to nearby Centerport where they continue to manufacture firearms today as well as providing customer service through their Elkhart gunsmith shop until this day!

Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the eastern edge of the county and is bordered by Harford County to the north, Frederick County to the east, Montgomery County to the south and Washington County to the west. The name "Elkton" comes from two Irish immigrants who settled in this area in 1828. The first settlers were John and Catherine Beattie who arrived in 1829. The Beatties are notable for being one of only two families to ever own land in what would become Prince George's County. They farmed until 1840 when they moved westward into Harford and Frederick Counties where they built a farm named Elkton (now part of Falls Church). In 1854, John Patterson bought 640 acres near Elkton from David Hogg which he used as his rancho de campo until 1862 when he sold it to James Caldwell III. Caldwell owned it until 1886 when it was acquired by John Fenton who operated it as a general store before becoming its owner permanently in 1912. In 1916, Fenton donated 10 acres along Duck Creek Road (now US Route 50) to the town for use as a park; today that parcel forms part of Elkton Elementary School playgrounds. During World War II, Fort Meade was built adjacent to Elkton and many military personnel lived there during that time period including General Dwight D Eisenhower who visited on several occasions during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of United States Army Northwest Europe Theater of Operations (NORTHWEST EUROPE). In 1961, Congressman Thomas Peebles became the first Democrat ever elected from Prince George's County and he served three terms representing parts of Elkton - 1970-1974; 1978-1981; 1984-1988; 1990-1994. During his time in Congress he represented both districts which now make up portions of Montgomery and Frederick Counties respectively while also serving on various committees including those responsible for energy & environmental issues such as national security & homeland defense; appropriations/budgeting/national debt.; trade mark law enforcement/counterfeiting & intellectual property rights.; public works modernization program.; agricultural production enhancement program.; rural economic development project.- Today portions of these former districts make up Eastern Montgomery Borough while much smaller areas currently form Northern Frederick Borough

The community experienced significant growth during the American Civil War, with many families moving to Elkton from surrounding areas to join the war effort. The town also became a center for trade during the war years; timber was abundant in the area and goods were sold both locally and abroad. After the war ended, Elkton continued to grow rapidly as an agricultural center; production included crops such as cotton, corn (maize), potatoes, applesauce, sugar beets, haystack cheese, eggs (from hogs), milk products (such as butter) and furniture. In 1925, Elkton incorporated as a city under law No. 128 of that year; at that time it had a population of 712 people. The city declined in popularity over time due to its small size and lack of economic opportunities; however it continued to exist until 2003 when it merged into Towson City proper.
Elkton was first settled in 1792 by John Elkinton and his wife Sarah. The first school in town was built in 1802. In 1865, the town was incorporated and named for General Samuel Elkinton who had been a major general during the American Civil War.
