Elkton, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 5,890 at the 2000 census. Elkton is located on Elkton Creek and has a total area of 4square miles (11 km²). The town was founded in 1864 by John C. Alexander as a log cabin community on the banks of Elkton Creek. The first settlers in what is now Elkton were families from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1824. They built cabins near the creek for themselves and their families untilLogging activity along the river increased and new areas became available for settlement, so that by 1830 there were 10 houses settled within 4 square miles of the present-day downtown core of Elkton Creek. In 1832, Michael Fenton bought 640 acres south of Elkton Creek from John Alexander for $1,200 cash. On this land he started to build his plantation which would become one of the most important landowners in southern Prince George's County. He named it "Fenton's Mills", after himself and his son-in-law Samuel Fenton Jr., who had acquired 50% interest in it before Minton & Company sold its interest to him two years earlier. In 1836 he erected a large brick building on what is now Main Street which served as his mansion until 1886 when he moved to Frickville where he died three years later at age 89 years old. Eugenie Beale Bullock Ridgway married Michael Fenton’s son James Ridgway on October 15th, 1840 at Stonington Presbyterian Church just east of today’s intersection of Birch Road and Elm Drive – both roads leading into downtown Elkton today are named Ridgway Street commemorating this event! James Ridgway operated Fenton’s mills until 1862 when he sold all interests including much of the lands comprising modern day Elmwood Park to Edwin Ladd Hurd (1822 - 1925) for $2 million dollars which made him one of Northern Maryland’s most powerful men during prohibition era! His grandson Donald Hurd (1947 -present) also owns significant portions of eastern Prince Georges County including part or all of current day Elkton Township! Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the eastern edge of Prince George's County and is bordered by Upper Marlboro to the south and east, Middletown to the north, Bowie to the west, and Potomac Park to the northwest. The community was first settled in 1786 by English colonists as part of what would become Prince George's County. The first settler in Elkton was John Balfour who came overland from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1786. He platted what would become Elkton on a large piece of forest land that he had acquired from Lord Baltimore for $1 per acre (or $160 per square mile). At that time there were no roads or rails in this area so settlers traveled by horseback or wagon until 1828 when a turnpike was built through this area connecting Middletown with Bowie and thence Arabicatoa with Fredericktown via Georgetown. In 1839, Andrew Hargrave laid out a township which became Elkton after he won an election as its first trustee. In 1867, a post office called "Oak Hill" was established within the new township; it closed in 1898. In 1909/10 there were 1081 residents living in 572 households; 640 of those lived in elkTON proper while 602 people lived scattered around other parts of its Township including "Oak Hill". By 1930 only 925 residents remained within Elkhorn Creek township making it one of America's smallest townships by population size at that time with just over 1000 total residents enrolled therein (of which only 506 resided within elkTON proper). A new school building was completed for elkTON students in 1951-1952 despite protests from parents due to lack of space inside their homes following World War II bombings that destroyed many homes across America including Elkton’s own school buildings as well as nearby Bowie Elementary School and Lower Marlboro High School – all located less than two miles away from where these students now attend classes! The Ford Motor Company donated land adjacent to their plant on Depot Road for use as an automotive testing ground during WW2 giving rise to local legends about “the red truck” which locals still refer to today if they see any unmarked trucks outside their home – something that has yet to be verified! As America went through various changes during the 1960s & 1970s both economically & socially - many changes took place right here at our very doorstep including: numerous expansions & acquisitions by national chains such as Safeway Supermarkets; conversions & demolitions of entire neighborhoods near Highway 95; etc.; but perhaps most significant overallChange took place when our once vibrant community lost much more than just its close proximity to major shopping malls (& highway) – Elmton slowly began slipping into obscurity amidst escalating crime rates becoming known locally simply as “The Town That Wasn’t There Anymore” although recent research suggests otherwise! After the war, Elkton became a center for transportation and business development. It prospered through the years, becoming one of Maryland's largest cities. In 1929, Elkton merged with neighboring towns to form the newly named City of Elkton-Boydville.
